Its fine to be vigilant (heaven knows there's lots of stuff going on that needs to be watched), but those amongst us who are overly pessimistic are not helping to solve whatever problems we might have.
My bet is that this nation will still be here long after you and I have departed from this earth, coynclector (and doing well, even without us!)
We will certainly survive another depression if it comes. It's just that 99.9% of the people would never see it coming nor thought it was even remotely possible. That's the kicker. It's no longer in anyone's vocabulary. Depressions are now "impossible" with the FED pulling all the "right" strings.

You seem to consider the nation and the value of the dollar as inseperable. Yes, the nation will be here for a lot longer than us with periods of greatness. There will also be periods of despair brought on by poor government, wars and excessive spending. It is not my intention to solve anything for the US. The mentality of entitlement and the belief we can continue to spend what we don't have has doomed our financial system, the government will survive (even if the Constitution hasn't).
It is only my intention to solve my own financial issues and provide for my well being, it is the only thing I have the power to do.

Throughout our nations's long history, there have been naysayers prediciting that the sky will fall soon.
They have all been proven wrong.
My bet is, is that they'll be wrong this time, too.

<< <i>So much gloom and doom. How did we ever survive? >>
We survived on a gold standard and balanced budgets. We have since abandoned both in favor of providing affluence to the masses on borrowed money.
The country will survive, the financial system will not and this is not the first time the financial system in this country fell apart.

True, in 1928 there were extremists who said that things couldn't continue. Too many negative people.
Besides 40 trillion in liabilities isn't much, we'll get the money somewhere. The government will take care of it.

They go up, they go down. Not sure what your point is.
This isn't the first place I've heard it either.
I've been hearing that for the last three years.
