Tipping the scales

I had been under the impression that the "cartwheel" twopence was the largest and heaviest coin
the Brits ever had to deal with in circulation. But apparently another shortage of coinage in the early
19th century led to the issuance of a variety of "commercial" tokens including this Birmingham Workhouse
3 pence. It weighs in at about 2 1/2 ounces, 45 mm across (vs 38 for a silver dollar) and nearly 5mm thick.
A careful examination of the surfaces of this piece suggests it did in fact circulate! image Anyone who accumulated
80 of these puppies could trade them in for a one pound note!
