I'm "ripping" 5 1980 Basketball wax packs (come on Bird, Magic!)

What a pleasant surprise to see 5 1980 basketball wax packs in one of the Fun Bags I opened.

U don't see too many 1980 basketball rips, or for that matter I have not noticed any vintage basketball "rips" at all! image

So, I thought u would be interested in seing if I pull a Larry Bird, Magic, etc.!

The first of 5 packs:

seven of eight cards are not centered (including a Pete Maravich)! image

one with decent centering (Paul Wstphal, Scoring Leader) has a nice "ding" on the top edge! image

well a nice Team pin-up of the Bulls, plus a 26 year old pice of gum!

  • Ouch. Too bad about that dinged edge. That would have been a sweet Cowens/Westphal. Jamal Wilkes wasn't exactly Acie Earl either. That's a nice card.

    Now ... C'MON BIRD/MAGIC!

There is ONLY one Acie Earl. I was at a Celtics practice, they ran a play where the ball was fed into the middle to Acie, he was supposed to fake right, turn left and take the shot. Play goes on, looks good and all then you hear the coach (think it was Chris Ford), yell from the sidelines. Good job, now let's try your other LEFT Acie. Next thing you see is Eddie Pinckney come over, get a marker from the play board, go over and label Earl's feet L and R. True story.

Speaking of Pinckney, he and Rick Fox were doing an auto thing for charity, I had a bunch of the old Sacramento Kings uniforms and warm ups that were worn by Pinckney. I bring the stuff up and put it on the table, Fox takes one look at the stuff and says "nice Eddie, baby blue and white, you had to wear that stuff?" Pinckney replies "yeah, just like you wore at North Carolina". Fox replies "Ok, you got me". Once again, true story.

    ripped the other 4 packs:

U gotta just love those polyester jackets of the celtics' coaches (i.e., the Celtics "Pin-up" Pic, looks like Red Aurbach & Bill Fill Fitch, no?)

A lot of collectors don't like the '80 basketball set for some reason, but I think it's pretty cool. I mean how could you get any cooler than Magic Johnson and Larry Bird sharing the SAME rookie card, one that also included Dr. J??? A few years back I decided to collect every Bird and Magic card in the set in PSA 9. There are 9 in all. It was a fun chase!

"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
