1925 5 Reichs Mark - New Pics

Hi All,

Local antique/coin shop who almost never has darkside stuff asked me if I'd be interested in this. I kind of like the design - a little boring by some of the standards art-wise I've been watching many of you post though, but interesting.

I don't have a Krause, and would appreciate any info on it, maybe a grade & value opinion. It isn't one of those coins I need to have, but thought I'd ask to see what your thoughts are. Forgive the images, taken at the shop with cruddy lighting and through a 2x2.

Thanks a lot!
Jeff

    Jeff,
I like the looks of the coin. Mintage 204,000 Looks AU to me but difficult to tell from the image.

    edit: May only be EF.

EF40 tops. Too much wear on the leaves for AU. Might even stray down into VF35 territory.

    KM #47. $55 in F, $110 in VF, $160 in XF, $255 in UNC.

A nice piece no matter what the grade. Looks very original. Well worth picking up.

LOL - Unfortunately, with my darkside knowledge, that's pretty close to how I feel about it image

Thanks Ajaan & coinpictures - even at VF for what you stated, looks like I'll get a good deal. I'll have to go back tomorrow and pick it up.

Is that considered a semi-key or anything out of the ordinary?

Oops - seeing as they are asking up to 5x less than Krause, am I to assume I need to be there as they're opening the doors? I forgot you're only 45 minutes from me image

If you ever get really bored, I can take you through my standard shops. Between Westfield and Angola, there are probably a dozen antique stores that carry some coins and tokens. I don't have a bonafide coin shop until I drive down to Erie, or up towards your way.

Don't worry Jeff. I'm not going after the coin. We do have a code of ethics here on the darkside. Besides, I'm too lazy to drive down there. I've been to and through Fredonia way too many times when I serived gasoline stations.

Ah, Westfield, NY. The smell of Welch's jelly.

I have a sentimental attachment to the land that this coin commemorates - the Rhineland Palatinate, in southwest Germany - a great land with a long history and culture, fine wine, millions of castles, and tons of charm. I spent several years there as a youngster, and still speak the native language of the region, Paelzisch.

    Nice coin too!

Just went and got the coin at lunch. Need to get back to work, took new pics, but the 1st set may actually be better.

How come nobody told the newbie about the cool writing on the edge this coin has? image When it was freed from the 2x2 it was a nice surprise.

Edit: The true color is closer to the original picture, but I flooded it with light real quick just to get the details a little better. Do your original thoughts/grades still hold true with the new pic?

I'll bring it with me Sat.

So if the general consensus is VF, and Krause says $110 for VF - what does that translate to in reality? Is Krause more like a greysheet where things go for about what is listed, or more like a certain online price guide that is never really close?

I'm happy as it was only $30. Maybe I'll see one at the show Sat and get a better idea.

I'll give you $50 for it right now. image

Krause can be right on, very low, low, high, or very high. The best is try to find one that has sold on eBay.

I'd say upper-VF. Great coin at a great price, you should be happy.
