Josh or Coach or somebody else with ancient coin knowledge...

This guy needs some ID help.

I swear that coin looks like it might be a brockage. I suppose that would make the reverse design harder to see (or would it obliterate it entirely?) Ever seen a brockage on an ancient coin? Am I barking up the wrong tree by even mentioning it?

Appears to have been struck on top of another coin maybe?

It is in fact a brockage.

It appears to be a Roman Provincial coin minted in the name of Crispina, the wife of Commodus (c. 177-192).

Unfortunately, because it is a brockage, it's not possible to tell exactly what province the coin came from since the ethnic describing the city/province is on the reverse and has been obliterated by the brockage strike. On the plus side, I haven't seen many (if any) provincials with a brockage strike, so it's kind of scarce and interesting in that respect.

  • agree with Civitas! Was this a sestertius bronze? I've never seen a brokrage like that on an ancient roman bronze before

Thank you both. I thought it looked like a brockage! What a cool find for this guy! Though it's on a metal detecting forum, I take it he did not dig the thing personally, but rather bought it in a bulk lot.

Josh, any ballpark estimates on value?

Retail is probably somewhere between $150.00 and $250.00.
