So PSA... are you or aren't you going to REALLY ever grade wax packs?

let's see- an announcement was originally made on these boards in august, 2005 and more than thirteen months later, STILL no news or details about when or IF psa actually is going to get it done! image
somebody at psa certainly deserves to get ripped over this fiasco...

ANYBODY???image

  • anthony-
    that's GREAT news!
how much are they charging? what is the turnaround time? why is psa SO reluctant to share ANY of this info with anyone except a few collectors & dealers?
btw- what pack are you having graded?
  • There going to make collectors look else were and then after the ship has set sail , PSA will then start grading packs. Besides these things take time.

  • Their is an ad for PSA pack grading in the 10/13/06 edition of Sports Collectors Digest. Basically it shows a pack 72 Topps Baseball graded a 7. They tell you to call an 800 number or visit their website for additional information.

    Good luck Anthony.

I'm looking forward to the scans.

I would like to send in a box eventually - I can't wait to see how 92UDs look in their holders!

I submitted 4 or 5 packs on another friends order at the National. We didn't know the price, but it turned out to be $14. each for the '74 pack and $20 each for the '60's packs. The packs I submitted were all Topps tests, tougher ones from late '60's/early '70's. The understanding was that they would get done when they got done, so I wasn't in any rush. My last Global order that was promised in 2 days took 3 months and a lot of 3rd party prodding, so I figured I had nothing to lose.
The pack holders at the National looked great, they protected the pack well on both the sides and the top and bottom.Solid as a rock and well thought out. The packs shown all had 7 as the sample grade, but that was a default. I've got about 85 different packs from the '50's thru '70's and will probably get them crossed at some point. PSA is only grading standard size packs at this point, and will tool up for larger packs when they can. From what I was told packs need to be broken out to be crossed over, since Steve (Hart) needs to have them in hand to properly asses them. He will only give them a thumbs up or thumbs down, and then they will go to the graders for numerical grades.
I suspect that packs will be added to the master set registry, maybe as a bonus point, but this is all a guess on my part. I consider a set complete when I have all the variations, a pack, wrapper, box and some sort of uncut sheet or panel, but that's just me. I've always loved the graphic visual of packs, and with a couple of exceptions ('64 and '69 cello, notably) don't go after rack or cello packs.
You guys now know everything I do about this. As soon as I get them in hand I'm happy to post images.

  • Wow, Griffins, I'd love to see some of your complete sets. That's a really high bar to achieve...

I also like to get something more than just the cards for a complete set, but I don't know where to draw the line. Take 1948 Bowman football or Chicles, for instance -- I have wrappers from each of these sets, but no unopened packs. I've heard a rumor of an unopened Chicle pack, but never seen one. For 1948 Bowman, I've again never seen one. Uncut sheets from these sets would be even more impressive. How about wrapper bonuses, such as the Chicle premium photos that were available through wrappers? Or, in 1948 Bowman, there were trinkets (sp) of all kinds available from the backs of the cards. I've never tried to track these down. I wonder how easy they are to find...

Just another level of collecting -- cool.

I never said the set had to be gradeable, just complete!

Sometimes the companion pieces for a set are the coolest part of it. There was an auction recently that had uncut sheets of '48 Bowman football. Panels of '60's and '70's sets are really reasonable, as are wrappers. Packs from the mid '70's on can be very inexpensive, and having one to go with your set makes for a great visual display. If the packs for a particular year aren't affordable the wrappers usually are, or some other piece that went with the issue is.

Here's the send away membership card for the Knot Hole League, the premium advertised with '34 Goudey. For the cost of a nice graded common these can be found.

Sorry for the brief hijack. I think pack grading is really necessary, perhaps even more so than card grading. I'm glad there is competition in the marketplace for this, because it benefits collectors the most.
