Who will get the cards after you "croak"?

I was redoing my will the other day and I realized that my kids have zero interest in collecting cards. I would be interested to know what kinds of things you have done to "protect" your collection after your death or if you have even thought about it.

    Good question.

I'm gonna be buried with mine.

  • I'm going to have my cards cremated and dumped out of a helicopter over PSA headquarters image

  • I haven't given it much thought yet. My kids are still young. Their interest in getting football cards in the mail is starting to wane, too.

A friend of mine thinks that my kids will sell all of my football cards for pennies at a garage sale...

Just tell the wife to call Mr. Mint who will surely give a grieving widow top dollar for her husbands junk collection.....image

My wife will get my cards. I'm sure that putting them all on eBay will greatly assuage her grief.

I do have a serious answer - now that I'm awake.

I'm in the process of an inventory - going very slow - so I better not die!

I plan to request that Qualitycards aka Cavalcade of Sports handle my stuff.

Jay not only knows what he's doing but he's honest. I consider him a hobby friend who could fly down here and ebay this stuff for my wife - and more importantly keep her from being robbed!

I recommend others consider some kind of plan to keep ones family from being taken advantage of.

Since I am an estate planning attorney I recommend you all meet with your local estate planning attorney and get a good will and trust! Make sure you tell them about your important items of personal property such as your cards, wedding ring, etc... and what exactly you want done with it after you go. Doing it yourself online is great... if you want your loved ones to pay an attorney later. My best probate cases are people that wanted to save money on attorney fees by doing their own plan! image

    Stone,

I also have a new will that lets Jay sell all of my cards. However in my will, he has to dress up as one of the Redskins Hogettes and sell them at Fed Ex field during a Skins / Giants game.

  • Hmm. They'll probably go to my brother(don't know which one of us will kick it first though, he is 7 years older than I), and if not him then my son(not born yet, no immediate plans for making him lol) but that's the plan. If not, then I'll probably give them to some friends and leave a box for my wife/kids to sell.

Cool, I"m going to start lobbying Jay for your US Caramels- and I'll get the leftover T3's as well!

Seriously, my cousin died in a plane crash few Xmas's ago with 2 little kids and no will. It put his wife thru hell at a time she had more than enough to deal with. If you have any assets at all please get some sort of will, including healthcare instructions. And if you have kids do it immediately. Everyone thinks they'll get around to it eventually, but it can come up rather quickly, unfortunately.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

    St. Peter.

Hey, I gotta get in somehow.
  • I actually have thought about that. My two boys are young but enjoy collecting cards so they might want them and the wife knows who to contact that I know/trust (but never met in person) that could provide assistance if needed.

Sad thinking of that, I honestly want them to "be around" and whats crazy is when I see on The Discovery Channel a story on the world ending in 20,000 or whatever years I sadly think *My cards are going to melt*image

  • My cards are going to my kids when they go to college. They can choose to keep them or sell them (to help with tuition).

I know one thing - they are not going to Mr. Mint. I would rather burn them then sell to him.
  • I've given this some thought myself. My wife and I haven't been married long and we're not sure about kids yet. I have a nephew who is 3 now, but he's spoiled and unless he changes I don't want him to have them all. I almost would want my wife to sell them via a friend that knows how to do it or to give them away to underprivilged children in the community as a way to help them find a hobby to have.
Where can you go online to plan your estate without having to deal with an attorney or fees?

So, Stone, where do you plan to be buried?

And does anyplace nearby rent one of these?

Great thread. I have no kids either, and overheard my 17-yr-old nephew bragging that he'd get my cards when I die. Here's a kid who takes little interest in his 54-yr-old uncle, anticipating my demise.

I said, "The hell you are. They'll be sold by then." Statements like that make for quiet holidays.
But would I really sell something I'm so passionate about?

Collecting anything must ultimately make us ponder our own mortality. Afterall, we don't own cards; we only rent them. At what point do you move on, if ever? For me, it's been an 18-yr hobby.

An artist once asked, if you have a picture in your mind and don't paint it, is it still art?
I asked, if you have the cards in your mind and sell them, do you still possess them?

So I'm slowly selling them off and putting the money toward new ventures that I don't yet possess, things that will enrich my life and broaden my experience.

The nephew will probably want a cut.
