What does PCGS mean by original, unopened Mint packaging ??

Do they mean the plastic see through coin holders??

On the 20th Anniversary Gold sets I got 10 sets that arrived in single big box. Now each individual box was in no special packaging. Just the gold slip cover, inside gold box, and lacquared case holding the 3 coins.

What do they mean by .... The original, unopened Mint packaging????

They mean the box that the 10 sets came in; they want you to submit them blindly.

(Priest) BLASPHEMY he said it again, did you hear him?
  • Thats pure bull sh*t!!!!!!!
If you think I'm going to receive a box with $25,000 in coins from a goverment agency and not check to see shipment is correct then PCGS is nuts!!
Only possible reason to request unopened postage boxes is to fool people into submitting those with rim nicks and scuffs.
    That really sucks................
  • 2many--You are so Right---Buy the Holder, not the Coin !
  • So they can send you a letter asking "WHY DID YOU SEND US THIS EMPTY BOX?"

image The only other reason they would want this is so that you send your coins sight unseen so they can replace a mint perfect coin with those that have rim nicks and scuffs!

    From Ron Guth:

"PCGS will offer special First Strike/20th Anniversary Set inserts for these coins subject to the following special limitations:
    1. All coins must be submitted in the original, unopened Mint packaging as received from the Mint within 30 days of the original release date (check with our Bulk Department for exact dates). Because the 2006-W $50 Proof and 2006-W $1 Proof coins were already issued earlier this year, the packaging must remain unopened for these coins to qualify for these special inserts.
    2. Individual submissions of coins 1b, 1c, 2b, 2c, 3a, and 3b (see above) will qualify for First Strike/20th Anniversary Set inserts as long as they are received within 30 days of their original release dates.
    3. Individual submissions of coins 1a and 2a will not qualify for First Strike/20th Anniversary Set inserts.
    4. Depending on when the various sets begin shipping, there may be some time overlap between coins 1c and 3a (the 2006-W $1 Mint State) and 2c and 3b (the 2006-W $50 Mint State). In case of overlap, the time “window” for the First Strike designation on one or more of the sets may be limited to the time left in the 30 day period for the sets that are shipped first.
Example: if the 3-piece gold coin set begins shipping on September 25th, the cutoff date for First Strikes will be October 24th. Subsequently, if the 2-piece set begins shipping on October 10th, the cutoff date for First Strikes will be October 24th instead of November 9th.

Following the expiration of any First Strike/20th Anniversary Set dates, PCGS will continue to designate coins from the 20th Anniversary Sets as long as the coins are received in the original, unopened, Mint packaging."

Since you didn't use the "F" word, I guess you can stay.
  • First strike image they spelled first shipped wrong. A worthless designation scam.

I intend to leave my gold set, as it comes from the Mint.

I will not send them in for first strike designation.

Dont know what I will do with the silver sets yet.

I can understand why PCGS needs to follow this procedure,

but Its more important to me to check the contents of the box

    myself and hang the designation.

  • As long as you send them the coins during the first 30 days after they are released you don't have to send them in the unopened package. You can open it and examine the contents to your hearts content. AFTER the first 30 days, if you want the First Strike designation, they have to be in the unopened mint packaging with shipping/packing date on the mint package being dated in the first 30 days.

So the only people who would really be affected by that would be those people who receive their boxes from the mint within a few days of the 30 day deadline. Get it more than a few days and you can examine it and still ship it to PCGS before the deadline. Get it more than a few days after the deadline and it will have a Mint shipping date that is too late for the designation. So the "I can't examine it" problem pretty much only affects those who get their shipments between days 26 and 35.
  • Unfortunately that only works for the w uncirculated and the reverse proof. Since the regular proof was released earlier this year, in order to get the first strike/20th anniversary slab, you must send that coin in the sealed shipping box from the mint. Thus, all three nmust be sent.

I find it humorous that two weeks ago the majority of members here were disgusted with the first strike designation and claiming that it meant nothing and that it was just a marketing gimmick. All that may be true. But.......

I would like to see all of those same members rally in unison on a boycott of the first strike instead of complaining against PCGS for their submission policy.

One week you hate it, the next week you hate that you missed it. What's up with that??

You may think it's BS, but think about it from PCGS's (And NGC's) point of view... how else can you prove that the coin that you submit is actually from an Anniversary set? If all you had to do was submit it with the CoA or in the original boxes, then you could just keep sending in coins, potentially having more than 10,000 coins in anniversary holders... other option would be for them to keep your CoA... would you want to do that to prove that your coin is an anniversary coin?

  • The whole thing is a joke.

'First Strike' is at best a misleading marketing ploy.

To have special labels for identical coins simply because they had different shipping containers is a joke.
The standard proof eagle in set is same as that offered earlier in year. Face it........its the same coin!!

Why not do the same thing with mint sets, legacy sets, etc., etc.

As to why this board has any concern about submissions is simple..........greed.
If ill informed novices will pay stupid money for worthless 'First Strike' labels provided by TPG then its going to happen.

Very sad and a clear indication of a market top!!!
