WOW!! SMR not even close!!!

Man am I bummed. Had an Ebay auction end last nite....1970 Topps Super #34 Pete Rose PSA 9 MINT. The SMR lists this card at $275, mine sold for $91.14....less than 35% of that!!!! Is that really how stuff from the '70's is now?? I know in the past Rose stuff has been a pretty good sell but this one just blew my mind. Wish I held onto it now but I guess hind sight is 20/20! -Claude

  • As with anything, its a crapshoot on Ebay. One day the card goes for full SMR, the next day for 91.00. If you auctioned it off one week later or one week earlier, maybe you would have doubled your money. It comes and goes in cycles, and some circles get smaller while others get bigger. As an example, PSA 10 Fleer Sandbergs were going for 50-60 dollars with red writing in the SMR, now they consistantly go for 100. Go figure............

Did you sell a Fleer PSA 10 Sandberg RC? About 2 months ago, I got $250 for mine on Ebay. I was tickled! image

  • Claude,
As with the cycle of things...Rose is back in public distain for his "Sorry I bet on Basball" signed balls.
It's kind of like stocks....that's equivalent to having a bad quarter to report to the shareholders. Prices will go down a little until something else breaks.

If they ever lifted his ban...prices would skyrocket....when he passes away, prices will climb a little....one or two more bafoon moves and they could get worse.

I've actually had this happen a few times...always when ending auctions on Tuesday nites?? I have read several threads where everyone talks about how Tuesday nites get the best bids so I've tried it a couple times now and not with good results???? I always do better ending them on weekend nites. Guess it's just me, but I think I'm gonna stick to ending my auctions on weekends. Tuesdays just dont seem to work for me.

5STAT.....Yeah, I wondered if the recent baseball signing thing would have an effect....maybe that's all it was this time!

Just had a PSA 10 88-89 Fleer BSKB, common though, go for $5. Thought I would get at least over $10 for it!!

As with everything, there are people that buy at 250.00 and sell at 60.00, and people that buy at 60.00 and sell at 250.00. Nothing to do with SMR. Nothing to do with right or wrong keywords. Just the luck of the draw...........

Fanatic- I understand that, and I didn't lose money on the deal...picked it up raw for under $20. But I just thought the selling price would be a little closer to the SMR.....less than 35% isn't too good, but as I said. I picked it up raw and sent in to PSA, so I made a good return on my $$ invested!
  • Profit or not, less than 35% stinks. I watch things sell sometimes for 2X SMR, so I list mine and get 50%. I see things go cheap and list one and get 4X what they have been going for. I have tried listing on weekends, weekdays, holidays, mornings, nights, any time or day you can imagine and there is just no common ground for good days, bad days, good times and bad times for auctions. Anyone saying otherwise is just plain wrong. All you need is the right two (maybe 3) people that want your card (even if there are 4 others listed) and you can throw the SMR out the window.............

1970's are the toughest of the supers, but not all that popular. Because of the nature of the card, a 9 super is not to be equated with a 9 standard issue. But I agree, you might have gotten more (or less!) on a different day. I'm sure you made some collector very happy.

I am starting to doubt that ebay is the best avenue to sell cards. If you take out the hot rookies and high grade vintage, I would say that most card prices on ebay have been declining since mid-summer. I thought it would pick up by now, but it hasn't.

I am especially surpised how weak the market is for football. 2006 Rookies are going fine, but everything else is down.

Boy aint that the truth. The only problem is every other auction site that was around is long gone. High dollar and hot rookies you do fine. Anything else is a roll of the dice, usually ending up in the buyers favor by a large margin. Someone has got to provide competition to Ebay of it will just keep sinking...

Talking about the Rose "Sorry I bet on Basball" signed balls. I can't believe someone offered and paid $30K for The Halper collection when you you can buy them from Rose's website. The people at the auction house should feel terrible for ripping off the buyer when they can purchased them for a lot less on Rose's website. The general public should take note and realize what a injustice has been done in our hobby. All I can do is shake my head and never buy from that auction house. Forget buyer beware, there needs to be responsibility all around.

I think they paid the premium because those were #'d and are now widely known as the balls that started the market back for him to resign "Im sorry balls". No matter how many he signs now, those #'d ones will always be more "special".

Who's to say Pete Rose won't number more balls the same way? That was a big risk to buy the original lot of balls thinking they would be worth more because they were unique. Keep in mind, this is the same guy who made copies of his World Series rings and gave (sold?) them away as originals.

I'm don't believe that is true. If there are more marketplaces to look for cards on, prices will go down. Being a net buyer/collector rather than seller, I for one am all for cheaper prices, and would love to see the supply of cards increase through more auction sites.

Claude, if this is the first time you've taken a genuine bath on a high grade PSA card then you should consider yourself a very lucky man. image

Lee- Actually didn't take a bath cuz I had under $35 total invested in the card/grading/& shipping...it just seemed odd that the SMR was so far off. But ths SMR is also off the other way and stuff goes off the charts so you win some & lose some. I sold a '68 Yastrzemski OPC World Series card a couple months ago in PSA 8 which should only be a $25/30 card but it went for over $300, so you never know either way.....How/when does PSA update their prices and how do they go about it?? Do they police closed auctions and factor that in when adjusting pricing levels??

I jhaven't actually had this confirmed by anyone at PSA, but I'm reasonably confident that the process involves:

    1) Some dollar amounts written on ping pong balls
    2) A big hat
    3) A blindfold

Robert Edward Auctions did nothing wrong. The auction with the 30 "sorry" baseballs from the Halper collection was not due to happen for months. One gaming industry company made an offer to purchase them outright for $30,000. Under the circumstances of Rose now signing and selling more that way, REA recommended that the consignor withdraw the baseballs from the auction and accept the offer, and the consignor did so.

Oh, no they did a very honorable, fair, and reasonable transaction for who? If the buyer wasn't a gaming company, but joe the average guy would you feel differently? You said it, the same balls can be purchased from Rose's website. This is very bad for the hobby.

How about the 1978 Topps baseball PSA 9 #400 Nolan Ryan that just fetched $512 BUCKS this week? That would be well over 400% of SMR ... image

According to the email REA sent me they made the buyer of the Rose balls aware that they could be purchased from the website for less money than the $30k they paid.
