What the ... ?

Can anyone with knowledge of Candian >>> US shipping please help me out? I won a few auctions today for some older raw cards and the total came to $13.65. The seller is in Canada and emails me saying the shipping will be $4.35 bring the total to $18. I'm actually pretty excited because I got the cards for much less than I imagine the seller wanted them to go for (only 2 bidders including me and the other bidder just bid the opening price) and I wondered if they'd try to shaft me on the shipping since it wasn't detailed in the auction. The seller mentions in the auctions (no irregular) that he is absolutely in NO WAY responsible for items that aren't insured so I write back and say that I'd like to purchase the insurance and get back to me with the total. This is the response:

"It would be an additional $11 on top of the $18.

Thanks"

Does this sound right? Is this how much insurance is to ship to the States from Canada? He didn't try to shaft me on the shipping so I don't know why he would try to on the insurance unless he doesn't want me to get it for some reason (?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Arthur

I am in Canada and that is correct, it is a ridiculous amount to insure items out of Canada....I usually quoted the same, $11. Over 1000 eBay transactions and nothing got lost. If he has good feedback, take the chance (no insurance) and you will be fine. Just be patient, if your package gets pulled in at US customs, it might take a while longer....

Insurance is VERY expensive for packages shipped outside the U.S. and your recovery claims are limited in most cases, too. Mail to and from Canada to the U.S. is very reliable in my experience. For a package of that value, I wouldn't sweat it.

  • Sounds about right. I'm as patriotic as any Canadian, but our postal service blows. If you paid by Paypal, screw the insurance and let PP get your money back if your package doesn't arrive. Just because he SAYS that he isn't responsible, doesn't mean that eBay agrees with him.

No offense to any neighbors from the north who may read this, but I have given up on purchasing anything that has to cross the U.S. / Canada border.

In the past year I have had 2 packages lost, another 4 or 5 completely destroyed, and one other time was sent a misrepresented item in which i couldnt recoupe money or resolve the problem.

  • Thanks for the help guys. I just paid him through PayPal without the insurance. It just doesn't make sense to pay that for a $13+ item. I never knew it was that expensive. The guy's feedback is pretty good and the emails seem pleasant enough. I'll risk it.

Bri, I see what you're saying but it's hard to turn down 250+ 1931-1933 Tobacco cards for $13. image

    Thanks again guys.

  • In terms of shipping from Canada....where my company is situated, I don't charge more than a flat fee of $10 if it's under $100.00

So I don't know what that guy is doing...

  • GraphingAddict,

Does that include insurance? He's only charging me $4.35 for shipping. The additional $11 was for the insurance.

Just expect to wait nearly a month even if the seller ships today.

Damn it. I want to get my sweaty little fingers on these things NOW! image

    Grrr ...
  • In all honesty, I have never shipped anything with insurance. Most of my items range in price from $15-$100. But if my customer asks, I'll use insurance.....check out my site to see.... www.dssports.ca

  • It is indeed $11.00 to ship an item registered and insured from Canada to the U.S. Hard to believe, but true. As a seller, if it's a high dollar card, I usually agree to pay 50% of the shipping if the buyer chooses to have the item insured.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've had no problems whatsoever receiving or shipping packages to Canada. May take a bit longer to receive though because of customs.

  • "Just expect to wait nearly a month even if the seller ships today"...........SIMPLY NOT TRUE
