1978 Topps Fun Pack Rip!

1978 Topps Fun Pack Bag of 30 assorted Wax Packs!

I ripped the Hockey & Football packs, will I rip the Jaws2, Battlestar Galactica & Close Encounters of the Third Kind (18 packs) image
I don't think so! (If someone desires those 18 packs, LMK, if we can cut a deal on them, that would be very cool! Those non-sportscard packs should be pretty nice material! Based on the Football and Hockey packs, that were in good shape (not "banged around" at all!).

For the most part, the '78 Topps Hockey & Football cards were fairly clean, smooth surfaces, edges and corners were, for the most part, nice. The main issue as always for me, was the centering issue.

Here are some highlights of this "12-pack rip":

rd

5 - 1978 Topps Football (edit: actually 6 football packs)
7 - 1978 Topps Hockey (edit: actually 6 hockey packs)

You got some really nice cards out of that rb - I guess that's why they call it a "fun" pack.

Do you collecto hockey? I know there's ice involved.

    thanx for sharing

  • Really great condition for a fun pack. Usually the corners are dinged to hell with all the movement in the bag. Nice purchase.

  • Sweet PIM Leaders card. Gotta love any piece of cardboard with Hammer and Tiger on it. image

Too bad the PPG Leaders is so OC.

Notice those '78 hockey cards were in a 1976 Topps wrapper.

mike, I've always liked hockey cards. Maybe with Onlypsahockey's '80's rip, I get more involved. I do like our Florida Panthers, even though they seem "sooooooooooooooooooo out of place" here in sunny South Florida! LOL!

BTW, I'm quite satisfied with the pulls from these 7 packs (edit: there was only 6 packs! sorry, my bad!). I have another "Fun Pack" (this one is 27 packs) being delivered soon!

mike here are a few more hockey cards from those 7 hockey packs:

Interesting, there was a 1977 Topps Glossy Photo card in every 1978 hockey pack. Somthing tells me these "shiny finish-glossy pictures" are next to impossible to obtain with a clean-mint condition surface, and not be mis-cut. Here is an example from today's rip:

I wish this (Sittler card) was centered a little better, because it looks great (IMO, it could have been a gem! "...shoulda woulda coulda..."):

Wonder why Topps did that? (...they put 1978 cards, and 1977 Topps Glossy Photos in '76 wrappers!) image

Maybe a smart way for Topps to clear out unused materials and inventory (i.e., wrappers, left-over cards, etc.). Interesting!

    Thanks for noticing that!

P.S. Is that a common thing for Topps to do in these "Fun Packs" (So, there could be some "GAI Graded" 1976 Topps Hockey wax packs out there, that are actually filled with 1978 & 1977 Topps hockey material! Wow!). Or some other variations of "mis-wrapped" Topps wax from other years of "Fun Bags" ?????

They should be able to pick up on it. There are 73's in 72 wrappers, etc etc. that are always noted on the flips. You never know though. Gotta say that those are some of the nicest cards I've ever seen coming out of fun packs.....

    Thanks!

    And I'm quite satisfied also!

In addition, there are other nice looking commons from these few packs that I did not scan!

I always thought the glossies had rounded corners. I did a quick ebay search to find a picture of one with rounded corners, and lo and behold I found both the rounded ones and the square corners like rbdjr's. You learn something new everyday.

Those fun packs are neat collectibles, reminders of a time when you could get a lot of packs for a few bucks. Thanks for sharing, rd!
