What's Up With The Cards?

grote15grote15 Posts: 29,694 ✭✭✭✭✭
Man, this is quite a collapse that is shaping up. Can the Astros actually pull this off? Lead now down to 2.5 and Cards have lost 6 straight with no end in sight. I know the Astros have a rep for coming on late, but this is ridiculous!

Man, who knows! The schedule seems like a wash, with the Cards finishing up against SD and Mil, and the 'stros finishing with Pitt. and Atl.... 2 1/2 games is still a hell of a lead this late in the season, although the ante has been raised by virtue of the fact that whoever ends up the bridegroom in the NL Central is almost assuredly not going to get an invite to the postseason as the wildcard.

Could be an interesting week coming up!

Me, too. I'm sick of these classic underachievers reaching the postseason every year...

Who cares? They ultimately suck in the playoffs anyway. Might as well just blow it now and avoid the later aggravation.

The Astros have certainly had more than their share of late-season heroics in recent years. But if the Cardinals blow this one, it will be up there with the '64 Phillies and '78 Red Sox as a candidate for worst late-season choke job in the history of baseball's regular season.

(I have to qualify with "regular season" because nothing can compare to the 2004 Yankees' choke job against the Red Sox in the ALCS.)

Nah, the Blues are like the Cubs of hockey. We love 'em knowing full well there will be no payoff at the end. There's certainly been some bitterly disappointing finishes to Blues seasons over the years, but it's much more maddening to see a team with a real proud history like the Cardinals flounder every October under LaRussa. Just making it doesn't cut it here.

Uh, no. The Oilers won 4 cups in the '80's, so no Oiler fans get to pile on when discussions of franchise futility are started (although you are certainly invited to the discussion as a card carrying member of the Astros fan club). (North)Star fans yes. Blues fans, hell yes. Blackhawk and Leaf fans? DEFINITELY yes.

Also, the Oil has been aggessively mediocre for the last 15 years or so, and just so happened to have it all come together this last spring. The Cards, by contrast, have been a very solid franchise (save a few years here and there) for about 20 years, but just cannot seem to get over the hump.

OK that does it, I'm all fired up now. Anyone want to go egg Denkinger's house with me?

Umm, if he's a member of the Astros fan club as you say, maybe he's talking about the HOUSTON Oilers? You know, the ones who blew a 35-3 lead over Buffalo in the playoffs?

Exactly. Frank Reich to the rescue!! 41-38 in OT if I recall correctly.

Eeeeeassssyy slugger. The NHL season is just around the corner, so that's where my thoughts were. And yes-- I think former fans of the Houston Oilers would certainly be granted a Presidential memebership into the despairing fraternity of 'fans of teams who couldn't get it done'. My bad.
  • This is one helluva collapse right up there with all of the historical collapses. Win or lose the division, LaRussa is probably going to get his arse fired over this.

I don't think the Cards will fire LaRussa--he's been there a long time and he's too big of a name to let go. He'll probably lose a few coaches though. The Cards are going to be doing some serious shopping for pitching in the offseason.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

As a Tigers fan I'll admit that slide as a little 'out there' (pun intended), but I don't think Madlock was actually looking to injure Fernandez.

Lead is still 1.5 after Astros extra inning win tonight. When do the Cardinals play the extra game to make up the half game difference. The schedule shows 4 games left for each team but I'd imagine that the Cards will need to make up a game somewhere if they are up or down .5 game on October 1. Anyone know?

The game against the Giants will be made up only if it matters, though it looks increasingly possible that it will matter to the NL Central - Pujols' heroics last night notwithstanding.

The Giants really have a chance to impact the race -- three games against the Dodgers and one against the Cards (if necessary).

I guess Phillies fans are also going to be rabid Giants fans this weekend.

Lead is now down to one half game after Cards latest loss tonight (they're down 8-1 as we speak). A virtual dead heat now so looks like the Cards have finally been caught. Amazing!

The Cardinals look like a team that will be put away easily in the post season should they survive the onslaught of the Astros and their own dismal stretch run.

Oh don't be bitter stownie, just because 'your' teams have all stunk it up this year: longhorns exposed as frauds, the stros needing a season ending collapse by the cards to even smell the playoffs, and the texans looking more and more like the clowns they are for passing on Bush.

I dunno, Ax. I think the NL is wide open this year, and I wouldn't want to face a team as hot as the 'Stros. Especially in a short series when they can possibly send out Oswalt and Clemens twice. As long as they keep Lidge out of the game when it matters, they could be dangerous.

No one's bitter, just laughing at your pathetic teams.

As far as Clemens goes, his postseason track record isn't exactly stellar...and when you're closer is still experiencing meltdowns and nightmares from last season, you arent exactly making anyone shake in their boots.
