    Overtaking the Boston Red Sox in the standings means a lot to the Toronto Blue Jays.

    Shaun Marcum and Jason Frasor combined on a two-hitter, and Toronto moved into second place in the AL East with a 5-0 victory over the Red Sox on Monday night.

    Unless they win the Central, in which case it will be the Tigs who are forced to serve up batting practice to the Yanks lineup. Although, really, at this stage I don't know if I really care. Are the Yankees that much better than Oakland? Their records are near identical, and the Yanks spent half the season playing the D-Rays and Orioles, so this could end up being one of those funky situations where no one team really stands out from another in the AL postseason.

    Things could change in the AL East next year if the Jays actually decide to go through with their plan of bolstering their payroll by 20 mill. Riccardi can GM circles around Cashman (IMO, and I understand there is a legitimate counterargument to this), and it seems-- and I admit this is counterintuitive-- that there ends up being a diminishing return with payroll, whereby the first 60 mill or so you spend over a 'base' of around 50 mill really counts for something, but the next 50 mill after that (i.e., the 50 mill that sends you from 110 mill to 160 mill) doesn't translate into a like increase in the # of expected victories.

    And that actually brings up an interesting question that I hope either Dallas Actuary or Skinpitch will be willing to field. Does the number of victories that one can expect with an increase in payroll escalate at a constant rate, or is there really a point of diminishing returns? Has anyone ever studied this?

    Don't forget that money can be spent to "insure" the depth of the team beyond the starting rotation, lineup, and bullpen with top of the line talent. So, if nobody gets hurt you win say 93 games and also, if guys do get hurt, you still win 93 games . So, I don't think that just a RAW number of wins is the right place to analyze your question .....
