OT: Jay Gibbons' foul ball hits his wife

Comments

  • Didn't Richie Ashburn foul a ball off which hit some woman in the stands during a game, only to foul a second ball off that plunked her as well while she was receiving treatment?
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

  • Don't know how true this is, but several sites make mention of it...

  • Richie Ashburn was the man. His foul ball escapades were legendary. He once fouled off 18 pitches in one at bat into a section were his friends were sitting..........
  • I'm a big fan of Jay Gibbons, but really the odds aren't that high. 1:50000 or so? I wonder though, how much carp he'll hear from it tho lol.

  • If memory serves me correctly, in was from the book "The Richie Ashburn Story" by Joe Archibald.....
  • From Wikipedia:

<< <i>During an August 17 1957 game, Ashburn hit a foul ball into the stands that struck spectator Alice Roth, wife of Philadelphia Bulletin sports editor Earl Roth, breaking her nose. When play resumed, Ashburn fouled off another ball that struck Roth while she was being carried off in a stretcher. >>

  • Makes you wonder if Roth wrote a bad column about Ashburn and he took exception to it?
