A registry question about multiples.

Someone recently made a passing comment about another collector (and rival eBay bidder) using multiples of high grade cards in their various registry sets.
Out of nothing much more than idle curiosity, is that a rule? In other words, if I had (for example) a PSA 9 Don Baylor rookie, could I use it in a Baylor set and a '71 set, or would I need seperate, individual cards for each set?
