Working on pics....Is it worth the effort? Very frustrating to the novice.

I can't get the white background to be white. The "auto" setting on the digital camera won't do it and the manual settings...well, I have to photoshop the color balace of the pic and I think they're turning out like crap. imageimage

  • A couple of ideas.

Try to get the coin color right, and don't worry about the background. You can cut that out in photoshop.

Some folks have recommended trying to white balance on a gray card from a photo store (try the gray side and the white side).

    Try different bulbs.

See Mark Goodmans photo articles on lighting. Called "lighting shootout".

Shoot the coins on a translucent LIT background (photo store)

Why are you trying to have white backgrounds?

I've always had best results for circulated silver with a light grey to medium grey background

I suggest you try a couple different shades of grey background paper and a couple different light combinations and camera settings until the pics you get look like the coins color

I've never used software to change images so maybe I'm missing out on that aspect

  • try using incandecent light and set white balance to the same. it may help. i don`t make any software changes to my photos. hope this helps.
