What are your opinions of these four bust halves?

Wanted to get your opinions on the grade and color on these halves.

Especially if you think the toning is original.

Would they be slabbed?

  • I like the 1829 the best, but they all seem to show signs of an old cleaning. Of course, my eye is inexpert.

What's going on with the reverse of the 1811? Die crack?

I don't really care for the color on the 1833.

They have all been cleaned. They seem to be in lower AU area.

I like the 1811 the most!
Great transaction with: Relaxn, Collectorcoins, OKCC

Do you see hair lines on those, Amanda?

    Yes..that's a die crack on the 1811.

I like them all, but I am biased toward bust coins. The 1829 is superb.

The images are not good enough to tell. Why do you ask? Because I saw signs of an old cleaning?

I am looking at the toning patterns, especially around the stars.

  • Old dipping?

That is my thought. And they have since begun to retone.

These pieces are good examples of cleaned coins becoming "market acceptable" through many years of retoning.

  • The "dipping is not cleaning" crowd won't like that.

    HI,

    Thanks for your opinion.

Do you think they would be slabbed?

  • << <i>The "dipping is not cleaning" crowd won't like that. >>

Oh well. I say it's all cleaning. Some forms of cleaning are more abraisive than others. Dipping changes the surface of a coin.

Others are, of course, free to disagree with me. image

    Of course they would.
Just sell them to me and save the fees.

Well, I do agree wiyh you.

  • I think they are all beautiful. The 1820 is a hard find. The 1811 I particularly like.
I'd have to see them in hand to determine, as best as I could, the originality of their secondary toning (from what I can see, they've all been dipped at one point), and to see if their are hairlines from wiping.
As for whether they will holder or not all depends on the grader. NT can be rejected as AT, and AT can be accepted as NT with all the TPGs, so your guess is as good as mine. I would CERTAINLY send them all in for grading.

1811, cleaned xf & awfully retoned

1820 cleaned xf, cheap sulfur retone-job

1829 decent au-55, but the color even here is questionable

1833 another cheap tone-job on a cleaned xf

these coins suck except maybe the 29, so PASS on most

I like them all, although it would be easier to render an opinion after seeing the coins in hand. I really like the 1811, as you can see the orange irridescent toning in protected areas. They are nice collector coins and I would say that they are all "naturally toned". (DUCK!! Here comes DorkKarl!!)

I like all of them too, especially the 1811 and its die crack adds to it. Both the 1811 and 1820 are slightly scarcer dates.

All four coins were cleaned a long time ago, but do not appear to have a hairline problem.

1811 O-109 R2, which has a noticeable defect in the upper lip. The details look to be PCGS AU50. I must agree with dorkkarl on the toning, looks AT. Might be bagged. I would not buy this coin.

1820 O-108 R2, which has leaves recut. Details look PCGS AU50. Toning pretty normal for retone around sulphur; I like it. Would be hard to pass this one up. Looks ok for grading.

1829 O-115 R1, I think. Details PCGS AU55. Toning looks fine. Looks ok for grading.

1833 O102 R1, I think. Details PCGS AU50. Toning looks fine. Looks ok for grading.

Note: Strong luster, or lack of luster for detail grade, could affect the PCGS grade by 5 points.

I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

I do not want to be hard on these halves, but the only coin I would really look at here is the 29. The toning is off on the other 3--sorry.
I would grade the 29 in the 55 range-depending on the luster- the other 3----I have to pass on--- they do not look like they should.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • Nice photos.& very attractive coins.

Probably all would holder XF45 - AU55 (the 1829 maybe better but too hard to tell from the photo).

Did I mention that I am the high bidder for Bust halves??? You know were to go with them. image

They are all beautifull - I'd get them graded as well. Did you just pick these up?
