Not sure I understand auctions like these...

...or I should say, why anybody would bite.

Mays auction

I mean, if I understand this correctly, the guy thinks he has a perfect card, but he won't slab it. Which means he wants the (potential) buyer to take all the risk, which is fine sometimes, but a $275.00 buyout?

Am I missing something? What sort of offer would be reasonable under the circumstances?

    No offer.

Look at the top left corner, it is all dinged up. On principal alone I wont buy anything from a seller who says RAZOR sharp corners then shows a card like that.

I noticed that too, but I thought maybe it was the scan. But yeah, this doesn't add up to me, so I reckon it's a pass.

That card is a 5 or 6. He'd make out like a bandit if he got $8 for it.

This reminds of the wheeler dealer who calls home:

I'm knee-deep in 1972's right now, and I would not list that card any higher than Exmt IF everything he said was true except for that upper-left "ding".

He's someone who believes he will find a sucker to buy that card.

He's the only sucker, however, for paying the listing fees on a card that isn't going to sell.
  • put in a best offer of $5.00

Maybe he made a mistake? His other auctions have similar ungraded cards for very high prices... but not as crazy as this Mays. I would say it was mistake or he was drunk. Just my guess. Or maybe he meant to sell it for $27.50? Still high but within line of his other auctions!?
