MLB bonehead (non)move of the night goes to...

Tona LaRussa, St Louis Cardinal's manager.

Bottom of the 8th, runner on base, he leaves Chris Carpenter in to face Lance Berkman who was already 2/3 with a HR and a double. The playoffs are coming and wouldnt you want to protect your pitcher? Keep him fresh? HELP HIM GET ANOTHER WIN????

So, there it is, Berkman up to bat and WHAM! a 2-run HR, second of the game. Cards dont score in the top of the 9th and Carpenter gets the loss. I didnt get to see the game on TV, was watching it on Gameday....anyone from St Louis area who got to see the game want to give some insight on this not so brilliant move???

It's not like Carpenter was pitching a shutout. He had already given up 4 runs. Yes, he has been pitching great and I believe got NL player of the week last week but why not give relief in that situation???

Yes, I can give some insight. I was watching the game. I just knew for sure that, since 1st base was open, that LaRussa would walk him. There was 2 outs. He could have walked Berkman and gotten the 3rd out. Then, he starts pitching to him. I start yelling at the TV, "WHAT ARE YOU THINKING, LARUSSA?!?!" I told my wife, "this is not good". Sure enough, 3-2 count, Berkman scorches one over the wall. I might could have understand if Carpenter was fresh and throwing a shutout, but, like you said, Berkman had already taken him deep.

In short, that was one of the most boneheaded managerial moves I've ever seen!

It's ok. This should just help prepare you for playoff disappointment again!

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12
