OK, this is not a hypothetical. I had some people asking for Proof Gold Buffaloes at a local show this past weekend. Obviously, I can buy these from the Mint at $800. So can they. In this situation, do you suggest to the person that he/she buy them from the Mint, and if not, what do you do?

some people like to see what they are buying before committing $800 to it...so you are offering a service for which they likely expect to pay a bit more to receive. If they want the gold buffalo, chances are they know the Mint sells them.

At $800 each and gold at $582 and change as I write this, I'd suggest that they or you buy them for less, elsewhere!

Mark, where do you get the Proof Gold Buffaloes under $800? And I know, not another Gold Buffalo thread! (NAGBT)

Here is a link to an expired Ebay listing (Sept. 13) where a few were available via BIN from a trustworthy forum member at $775. link

My guess is that with a bit of patience, you will find others available at that price or less.

The coins at $775 were probably already looked at for 70's. Better to pay the extra $25 and get mint fresh coins.

I tell my customers all of the time to order from the mint. Just told a guy to order the three coin silver sets from the mint. Wanted to know what I'd pre-sell him some for.

Just tell them that they can buy it from the Mint for $800 + $4.95 shipping, or if you want it now you can buy it from me for $825 cash or check. Give them the facts, and let them make the choice. We have been selling one a week at $825, becvause most people want instant gratification.

Thanks, Tom. I was wondering what to do on this. I was figuring that after the eventual sellout that I can get a bit more than $825, so I didn't take any to the show. But this is a good idea!

P.S. Thanks for buying the coins you bought from me at ANA!

They have a choice: Pay a modest premium for a sight-seen example they can specifically choose, or pay the $800 and play the Mint lottery and hope for an acceptable one.

I'd let them know their options and offer to help, should they prefer the easier route.
