Any boxing fans out there?

Hello all,

Just wondering if there are any fight fans out here. Did anyone catch the James Toney-Samuel Peter fight a couple weeks back? IMHO I thought Toney got robbed.

    Hey Mark,

I consider myself somewhat of a big boxing fan . Im still dissapointed in the way Toney fought against Rahman. He looked horrible in that fight.

    Hi dave,

I agree, but he looked pretty good in this last fight. He should have gotten the decesion.

  • Is there a legitimate heavy weight champ out there? I've lost so much interest in the sport because of all of the different belts and B.S. out there that I don't even know the top contenders anymore.

I used to be a huge boxing fan but my interest has dramatically waned over the years. If I had to put a finger on it, it is probably the advent of pay-per-view. I bought a few pay-per-view fights in the early days of pay-per-view, and always afterwards never felt it was worth the money. So it wasn't so interesting to watch the progress of the good boxers because I knew that in their championship bouts, I wasn't going to spend the money and watch the pay-per-view anyway.

Also of course the watering down of the various titles plays a part in my lack of interest. I have no idea technically how many "championship" designations for each weight class there are now? Four, five...more? WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO...more? It's ridiculous.
  • Here are the 3 reasons boxing is in a downward spiral IMO:

    1. The WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO. All 4 of these organizations are a joke.

    2. Crappy pay-per-view fights. At least half these should be "free" on HBO or Showtime.

    3. Lousy decesions by the judges.

Boxing is close to dead in the US these days and has only a niche following. I would bet you that 99%
of the general public out there could not name the current heavyweight champion for any of the governing
    bodies that issue the belts.
  • I watch boxing, but not as much before it got really bad.

Yes, I saw it and was disappointed in the decision, but understood it. It was a very close fight and if Toney thought he should have won it, he should have put on a better show so there would be little to doubt. Both corners thought their fighters needed a KO in the 12th to win it.

The real question is: What the hell was Toney saying after the fight? It sounded like ubonics to me. Can someone please translate?

Also, given Toney's antics after the fight, I think Sameul will better represent this sport - and God knows better representation is needed.

Actually Toney is a pretty nice guy outside of the ring. I used to work at a restaurant on Melrose avenue in LA and he came in a couple of times with his brother. He was always polite and left very big tips each time for the server. On the other hand I myself waited on Kobe Bryant and he was pretty much a big jerk who left me exactly zippo for a tip. He was very arrogant and was not polite to say the least.

  • PA-Toney although larger than I've ever seen him for a fight, actually had energy for many rounds in the Peter fight. To me, the decision really could've gone either way.

ESPN tonight showed the Tyson - Buster Douglas fight. I had watched that fight on TV live, and I had forgotten what a really good fight it was, throughout the fight, not just when Tyson got KO'd as dramatic as that was. I think at the time I was just expecting Tyson to knock him out so I really didn't focus much on the fight, especially when Douglas got knocked down.

I watched on TV live the George Foreman - Ron Lyle fight which had I think five knockdowns in about four rounds before Foreman finally won. Still the best fight I ever saw. But I haven't seen it since seeing it live back in the mid-70's and would love to see it on ESPN sometime but I don't think they've ever replayed it yet.

I have always wanted to watch that Foreman-Lyle fight. Never had a chance. The best fight I have ever seen on TV live is Hagler-Hearns. I'll never forget that one. Another good one was the first Leonard-hearns fight. I still say the ref stopped it too soon and should have let Hearns have the benefit of the doubt. For God's sake he was winning the fight! Although he probably would have not made it until the end.

Oh yes, Hagler - Hearns was a great one. I didn't see that one live, but have seen it on tape a number of times.

It's funny about the Foreman - Lyle fight. It wasn't heavily publicized and was just a Saturday afternoon fight shown I think it was on ABC. Wasn't expected at all to be anything memorable. But oh what a fight! I'm looking forward to seeing it again, if they ever show it.

And yes Tyson turned out to be a scumbag, but when winning the championship he was actually very popular and well liked. He was also a "fan" of boxing and knew the history of the sport. Tyson was very good, but there is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that prime for prime, Ali would have beat him, and beat him easily. Foreman would have also beaten Tyson easily. I'm not sure about Frazier - prime for prime I think Tyson would have probably beaten Frazier - I hate to say that because Joe is one of my favorite fighters of all time.

I am not quite so sure if Tyson would have beaten Frazier. Tyson had a weak mind and no heart. Can't say that about Frazier. I think once Tyson knew he couldn't intimidate Frazier he would have had a meltdown and got disqualified, quit, or got knocked out. When you think about the guys Tyson defeated in his prime half of them were already defeated before the bell even sounded. They were scared sh_tless. Did you see the look on poor Michael Spinks before he got knocked out in the first round. I could have sworn he was crying or was about to.

Well perhaps you're right about a fantasy fight Tyson vs Frazier. I think though Joe would have needed to adjust a bit his straight in and attack style. Certainly Frazier had more stamina and definitely Frazier has much more heart than Tyson.

Yes, I watched on TV live the Tyson - Spinks fight. What a first class joke that was - of course Michael Spinks basically a light heavyweight trying to fight a 225lb Tyson - ridiculous matchup. Of course Evander rose up from light heavyweight to be successful at heavyweight, but you know how rare that is to do, and Michael Spinks is no Evander Holyfield.

Holyfield is another one of my favorite fighters. A real class guy and a tremendous warrior. It saddens me greatly to see him continuing even though he still has talent - but I'm afraid in later years he's probably going to windup similar like Ali with Parkinson's Syndrome.

Used to be a big boxing fan growing up in the '70s. What a decade that was for heavyweight boxing. Ali, Frazier, Norton, Foreman, et cetera.

I haven't much followed it since it all went PPV.
  • I still watch boxing, I grew up watching. Although, most of my fights I saw were fights from the 60's-early 80s with my Grandpa. Today, I watch friday night fights when it's on. Not a fan of the heavyweights at all(lets face it, the best big athletes don't become boxers) but I'm a fan of the smaller fighters. MMA has def taken a big chunk out of what fighting I watch, simply because it doesn't cost me anything to see it comparitively speaking. You get to see K-1, Pride, and UFC all on digital cable. Why pay 30-35 bucks when once 2-3 times a week you can get a better show on basic comcast cable?

  • Anyone watch the "Contender" on ESPN? It is a pretty cool show. Most of the boxers on the show are pretty likable guys and you start kind of rooting for them. They say the winner of season 1, Sergio Mora might get a shot at the current middleweight champ Jermaine Taylor early next year. That would be crazy if he actullay won. It would be one hell of a longshot though, almost like when Foreman sent Michael Moore crashing to the canvas back in 1994. They have already fought each other once during the olympic trials back in 2000 when Taylor won a decesion and went on to the olympics.
