The 1/10 oz is a Five Dollar coin.

So 1/25 is a two dollar coin, right?

maybe $2 or maybe they would be better off calling it a $1

At 1/25 of an ounce, you'd hit it if you could see it. BTW, don't sneeze or you'll lose the coin.

The original gold dollar was about 1/20 of an ounce so this coin would be slightly smaller than the gold dollar. Aren't there other foreign gold coins out there that are this size such as the Chinese Panda? I think they would appeal primarily to the jewelry trade.

I could sell a hell of a lot more 2 ounce gold eagles than I could 1/25 ounce gold eagles.

These coins would be huge compared to some of the California 1/4 dollar fractional gold coins issued during the gold rush.

I'm sure they won't be a whole lot smaller than my half dimes. Haven't had a problem with sneezing around them yet.

Hey who cares if you destroy the market, make money now, right?

I don't know. They should be about 5 - 7% smaller in diameter and about 10% lighter

They are just positioning themselves for when gold shoots up. The smaller size will still be affordable to most people. image

They should start producing a gold coin for circulation instead, it could make more money with that idea.image

An Excellent Move on the US Mints part if it happens. This will put Gold where it belongs, Back into the Hands of the American People And cause Savings and True Wealth build up for American Families that can't go out and buy an oz at a time. In fact they should make it a yearly plan with no limits at a fair price so every one can buy Gold when ever they want to as a form of savings so Americans can diversify away from the fiat system that we are stuck in today.
1/25th is a great way to start.

  • hear hear, kelso, i would be one of "those people" and i would buy it.
  • 1/25 oz gets VERY small
  • MrKelsoMrKelso Posts: 2,912 ✭✭✭
But over time 1/25 can be built up into a mountain of savings over the long haul and not missed from the family budget.

The problem with tiny coins is that the manufacturing and distribution adds a proportionately huge markup to the coin. At the coin store we can buy one ounce gold eagles by the roll from an official Mint distributor for 3.75% over melt. We pay 11% over melt for the 1/10th ounce gold eagles.

Because they are usually purchased in very small quantities, 2 or 3 pieces at a time, we pay 43% over melt for the Australian 1/20 ounce lunar calendar gold. We cheerfully pass this cost on to the collector.
