1998 matte-finish Kennedy Half

My interest in coins is collecting,

As Kennedy collectors are aware, in 1998 the US Mint made 25,000 of the 90% silver matte-finish Kennedy half dollar which was available only as part of a special two-coin "Kennedy Collector's Set". Although the mint considered the matte half dollar a business-strike coin, rather than a proof I have seen it in references listed both ways. In my mind it is neither fish nor fowl.

25,000 is sure a low mintage, but the flip side (pardon the pun) is what is the demand.

I was wondering what you experts think of this coin. Do collectors of the Kennedy services in MS consider this a must have to complete the set? If the priced increased substantially would that dampen the desire of collectors to include this coin in a Kennedy set?

Thanks

Planchet

Well, I do remember when they were selling on ebay way back when for $250-$300 for a PCGS MS70. I remember very well passing on one that sold for around $275. image

Actually, it was more like 65,000.

Actually, the price of this coin is down from its all time high (Right when I bought mine).

I had hopes it would be like the 1995 proof silver eagle but it sure hasn't impressed me since. I think it will take off when they finally quit minting Hairy Heads. Maybe I should get another.

  • It is the key to the Kennedy series, but with ~65,000 minted I sure wouldn't call it an investment coin

Don't know about the investing but I sure think it is a nice coin to own.

  • I initialy passed it in the mints mailing to my regret and had to pay a premium afterwards.Even though it was sold with the Dollar coin it is part of the set as far as I am concerned as a Kennedy Half Dollar collector...

  • I like the looks of the matte Kennedy. My wife bought a 2 coin set from the mint. That turned out to be a good purchase. I'm not sure I would buy more than one at today's prices...

    What're those running nowadays Carl?
  • The RFK, JFK 2 coin sets in original packaging are running near $300.

(Sorry I didn't reply earlier. I signed off for the night after making my previous reply.)

"The price of this coin has increased on a fairly regular basis."

I'm glad I bought mine directly from the Mint, so I'm ahead of the game, but these have gone down in price not up.

I was impressed with the ad from the Mint about this matte proof Kenedy. I immediately filled out the order for 2 sets. Upon receiving the sets, I gave one to a friend of mine and kept one for myself. Looking back, I should have bought 5 instead of 2. The issued price then was $65 per set. I like the Kennedy but I think the series has been running for too long.
