Collectors of American Silver Eagle's, A Question
I was thinking about starting a collection of American Silver Eagles. I was interesting in knowing just how "popular" this series is. If you collect ASE's please post whether you collect MS or PF or both. Also, what type of holders do you use (assuming you do not collect TPG examples). Also, any tips for this series. Yes, I know the key is the 95 which costs about as much as my first car.
As to why I am interested in this coin, I like its look. I have always liked AW's Liberty Half and the ASE is the half on steriods and with a better strike.
Thanks

I sold both sets last year and got out of them. I love the coin, but
you have to be careful with the milk spot problem on the proofs; especially
if you start collecting 70's. Just remember they are bullion, and everybody on the
planet can get them very easily.
I have a PCGS set of MS69 ('86-'06), that I am thinking of selling soon....no longer get satisfaction from it.
We also have 2 sets of RAW SAEs ('86-'06) and misc SAEs (some toned in PCI and other raw and untoned that we like). We are keeping those.
We also have PR (almost all raw) '86-'06 with some extras. No plans to sell the set but may sell some of the extras.
The PCGS sets of MS69 seem to keeping going up a bit. Ebay seems to have them for ~$950+ right now.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
None show signs of rim toning.

I also have a few of the proofs in OGP, with no plnas to remove them.

Then do a search using the word milk spot.
The more you educate yourself in any hobby, the lesslikely you'll be to be disappointed.
MS set (86-06) in Dansco
MS69 set (86-06) in PCGS slabs.
I'm going for a toned set (mixed NT & AT) about half complete.
And when I grow
which should take another 5 years....................................................... the PO1 not the growing up.
Quit frankly I refuse to grow up, I may be getting old, but I refuse to grow up...

One last comment, everyone knocks this series as bullion as though that makes them less desirable. Let's not forget that the Morgan series was essentially a bullion coin in its day. Yes, a few circulated, but for the most part they did not. Morgan's are one of the most collected series, so who says bullion coins are not popular.
NGC MS69 86-2006 with additionall first strikes
Raw 1986-2006 in dansco album proof and MS with original proof boxes
Raw 1986-2006 two additional sets in dansco album
Raw Toned 1986-2005 complete set
Raw Toned 1986-2005 with 1994 and 2002 missing
5 other full mint rolls with misc dates. this is due to buying lots of eagles and cherry picking the best for my sets and keeping
the rest in tubes.
Started NGC PF70 with 3/4 of the way to go
Started PCGS MS and PR some toned and some not

Point well taken. If my memory is correct the Trade Dollars were somewhat similar to that as well. But now, they are a nice set to collect, if you can afford them.
