Collectors of American Silver Eagle's, A Question

I was thinking about starting a collection of American Silver Eagles. I was interesting in knowing just how "popular" this series is. If you collect ASE's please post whether you collect MS or PF or both. Also, what type of holders do you use (assuming you do not collect TPG examples). Also, any tips for this series. Yes, I know the key is the 95 which costs about as much as my first car.

As to why I am interested in this coin, I like its look. I have always liked AW's Liberty Half and the ASE is the half on steriods and with a better strike.

Thanks

I have a set of MS ASEs that I have in an Intercept Shield "museum quality" binder and slip cover (about 20 - 25 bucks). The set was started in 2001, is complete, and there is not one showing signs of toning. This is not true for an ASE I have in a DANSCO 7070 (no slip cover). Many of the moderns, including the ASE are showing signs of rim toning.

ASEs are very popular with those that colllect modern issues. The 1996 is the key date in the unc. set.

  • I had both complete sets in proofs (mostly 70's) and Mints.
I sold both sets last year and got out of them. I love the coin, but
you have to be careful with the milk spot problem on the proofs; especially
if you start collecting 70's. Just remember they are bullion, and everybody on the
planet can get them very easily.

    Very popular.
I have a PCGS set of MS69 ('86-'06), that I am thinking of selling soon....no longer get satisfaction from it.
We also have 2 sets of RAW SAEs ('86-'06) and misc SAEs (some toned in PCI and other raw and untoned that we like). We are keeping those.

We also have PR (almost all raw) '86-'06 with some extras. No plans to sell the set but may sell some of the extras.

The PCGS sets of MS69 seem to keeping going up a bit. Ebay seems to have them for ~$950+ right now.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • I have a set of MS ASEs by year in a Dansco 7181 (not a 7070 lol) in one of their archival slipcases.

None show signs of rim toning.

  • I also have a set though incomplete as I didn't get the 05 and 06 yet. It was an easy set to acquire because I didn't have to dig deep into my pocket

I have a complet set in a dansco ASE MS binder, even though I have the slip case, some are toning faster that others.

I also have a few of the proofs in OGP, with no plnas to remove them.

I keep a set of MS ASEs in a Dansco for my daughter. The coins will tone and she'll learn something from it.

I have a complete set of MS and working on a PF. The main problem with the coins is the damn milk spots. When these are present the coin really looks bad. Same problem with the chinese panda's only they don't spot you get a haze on the entire coin.

Before you start collecting these read this Thread.

Then do a search using the word milk spot.

  • Yes I collect them also.

    MS set (86-06) in Dansco

I'm going for a toned set (mixed NT & AT) about half complete.

And when I grow image up I'll submit my pocket piece (2004) and hope to fetch a PO1,

which should take another 5 years....................................................... the PO1 not the growing up.

Nice series, I had a complete set of Proofs, less the 95-W and also the Uncs. I sold the Uncs when silver went to $14 an oz. They are bullion.

One last comment, everyone knocks this series as bullion as though that makes them less desirable. Let's not forget that the Morgan series was essentially a bullion coin in its day. Yes, a few circulated, but for the most part they did not. Morgan's are one of the most collected series, so who says bullion coins are not popular.

Yep I collect them also. Here is what I have..

NGC MS69 86-2006 with additionall first strikes
Raw 1986-2006 in dansco album proof and MS with original proof boxes
Raw 1986-2006 two additional sets in dansco album
    Raw Toned 1986-2005 complete set
Raw Toned 1986-2005 with 1994 and 2002 missing
5 other full mint rolls with misc dates. this is due to buying lots of eagles and cherry picking the best for my sets and keeping
    the rest in tubes.
Started NGC PF70 with 3/4 of the way to go
Started PCGS MS and PR some toned and some not

Point well taken. If my memory is correct the Trade Dollars were somewhat similar to that as well. But now, they are a nice set to collect, if you can afford them.
