Sweet! Was it an upgrade or did you get it that right the first time?
  • I took off the last few months from actively collecting to reorganize my collecting priorities and sell or otherwise dispose a large portion of my collections. Now that things have settled down for awhile, I decided to concentrate on a nice Type set to leave my kids to fight over. This is the second addition to the set I've purchased this year. I posted the H10C I bought from DLRC last week which was the first . I'll re-post new Russview images of the coin when I have it in hand. Thanks for all your ooohhhs and ahhhhhs, glad of your approval. (just as an aside here...There won't be any dead presidents in my type set).

Oh...and it is in a PCGS MS64RB holder.

Great coin, great year, perfect grade! Congrats!

If I might ask you a question. You said...

What did you learn from this process, other than you now want to collect Type? What method did you use to sell or otherwise dispose of your coins? Were you pleased?

    Just wondering...Mike

  • To answer your questions in reverse order, Mike; Yes, I would say that I was pleased with the overall outcome on the disposing of the collections. (More of a small hoard, really). It was a long process that is still ongoing in bits and drabs, but you can't get rid of a 50 year old OCD accumulation in a short time...

I started to realize that I needed to do something with my wee treasures when I was debating whether I should buy a second safe to hold the overflow that was threatening to burst out from under the bed. Around the same time I was diagnosed with macular degeneration and I knew it was probably time to make some serious decisions about starting to sell off a good portion of it. This was in 2002. That was also the year my Mom had to go into an assisted living home and needed some financial assistance.

I started off by unloading my Fugios and Connecticut Coppers that I had since pretty near the beginning of my madness to Stacks in NY - My brother was the consignor for me, (He lives in NY and is downtown everyday - WTC survivor), and to be quite honest, I really don't know how smooth the transactions were for him w/Stacks, but mine were always positive so I assume it went well for him as well.

I next started selling my low-mid-range raw stuff on eBay and turning that cash into NGC and PCGS slabs (primarily Red Lincolns and Indianheads). I continued to sell on eBay until last year when I finally got burned out from dealing with the utter stupidity that some of the buyers displayed and started consigning the bulk of my mid-to-high grade raw coins to a local eBay consignment dealer. Again, I made out very well as I had many of these coins for years and years so was all $$ to me, the consignor, and my Uncle Sam.

After I joined the CU board after years of on-again, off-again lurking, I began consigning to some of the board members here. This is an opportunity for me to publicly thank and endose those that helped me with the process.

Tim Puro (VTCoins)- kudos for taking a large part of my Lincolns & Proof sets and other flotsam and selling the entire shiebang on a Saturday night auction and having to mail so many items at once to so many folks. I was most impressed with his accomplisment.

Jeremy Katz (airplanenut) - Here's a young fellow to pay attention to. How he juggles all the balls he does is beyond me. I see a future philanthropist and premier aeronatical engineer. If those fail on him, he can always sell on eBay, he's got the touch!

And of course Russ Hairyhead (Russ) - Absolutely top-drawer...honest as...well...Russ. Somewhat brutally honest in the most admirable of ways, and I will admit that his descriptions of my consignments would sometimes make me cringe a bit, but he was always correct in pointing out defects and abnormalities on my items to potential bidders. Surprisingly, that never seemed to hurt the hammer price. Got something you need to sell...Any of the above have my reccomendation.

The bulk of the Indianheads were sold at the Heritage Atlanta Signature Sale and the Exclusively Internet Auction immediatly following. It was probably the beginning of the top for Red Copper, as several of my coins set record prices to that date in both Indianheads and Lincolns. (the remaining Colonial Coppers i hadn't sent to my brother in 2002 were also sold in that sale but didn't come anywhere close to my expectations - I think Stack's is the better venue for that material). As far as a smooth transaction goes, I give them a solid 10. Their images suck though.

I also mentored a couple of YN's for awhile and they were receipents of small hoards of their own that were coins that I didn't want to bother consigning, but didn't want to see end up in a Coinstar machine at Safeway.

What did I learn from the process?...Well, for one thing, it wasn't quite as painful as I anticipated, although there are a few of the Indianheads I'll miss for awhile. I leaned that if you hang onto the damn things long enough, when you sell, it's almost all profit. I learned that the market is still vibrant in the range of material that I collected and doesn't seem to let the CU Forum downmarket doomsday'ers influence them. It's still healthy out there.

I learned that my OCD is still alive and well, but will be limited to the proverbial "Box of Twenty".

    Famous last words.

That was a lot of coins! I was happy to sell the coins and appreciate the opportunity. AmericanCopper had us auction his coins right after we were robbed and gave us some extra income that helped out a lot.
