Philadelphia Football (Cards)

For some reason I have been kicking around the idea of building a 1967 Philadelphia Set.

The reason I picked 67 is that I already have a Bart Starr and I also saw a graded PSA 6 at a show last weekend. The quality of the PSA 6 gave me some confidence that I could build a pretty good condition set from raw cards.

Has anyone ever collected this set? If not, is anyone at least familiar with nuances that I should be on the look-out for? Thanks in advance.

    Great set.

There is some good raw out there. There are several cards that you just will not find well centered. I think it'll likely take a while if you build card by card as some just plain don't come up for sale often. You would probably be better off buying some lots and selling off the extras once you complete the set.

  • Out of all of the Philly issues, 67 seems the toughest. There are a few threads in the archives regarding Philly football that will give you more info. Basically, if you are building a graded set, PSA 7 is the most economical grade with some very nice cards. You won't find much in the way of commons graded PSA 6. At this grade a dealer wouldn't even re-coup their grading costs. PSA 7's are basically really nice cards that didn't grade an 8.

I built a complete raw 67 Philly set. I think they are the nicest looking of the Philly's. I started in 91, picked it up again in 2000, and finished it last year. Over all prolly spent 3 years total on it. It's got some nice 2nd year cards and a few rookies. I've upgraded most cards and feel mine is a nice NM set highlited by a Sayers 2nd year card. Good luck on it, its a fun journey.

One nuance with this set is the blades that Philly used to cut them with. I think they used kindergarden scissors on most of the cards as rough cuts seem to be very common to set. Of course PSA does not take off grades for rough cuts. Centering is a problem because the boarders are so small that it magnifies off center cards. If you'd like I can post some of mine. All you need to do is ask. Joe

  • Thanks for the information. Their is a big show coming up here in Chicago in mid-November. If there is a dealer with good raw cards for a good price, it will be go time. I am always reluctant to buy raw lots on ebay.

67 is tough set, especially with the colored borders. The rough cuts can make for some significant chipping, but I have not graded enough of these to know how PSA accounts for that. '65 is by far the easiest high grade set but 66 can still be pretty tough, again with the rough cuts. I do have a local dealer who shows up about once a month that has a book full of Phillies (all years), some of the years have the bigger rookies and some are going to be more "local star" cards. ie. he usually has a good selection of Cowboys, Packers, Vikings & Steelers from those years. If you want to shoot me a list of what you need an criteria for the cards you'd like along with some idea on pricing, I'd be happy to pick them up for you.
