Quick lunch store visit - 2 questions: 95 Silver Proof & Civil War Kids Set?

StrikeOutXXXStrikeOutXXX Posts: 3,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
Only had about 10 minutes to run in my local antique/coin store at lunch. I told him I'd come back after work, but I had questions on 2 of new items they had

1) They had two 1995 Silver Proof Sets. Not an item I normally look at, but I noticed one set had cameo everything, and the other was weaker - a few non-cameo coins. I noticed PCGS only lists DC for most of the modern silver proofs - am I to assume a full cameo silver proof set is the rule, rather than the exception? Usually when I see older proof sets with cameo coins I get excited, but I'm beginning to think it isn't warranted here.

2) They also had two Young Collector's edition Civil War Battlefield Half Dollar sets. They are like a few page laminated booklet that folds out with the half dollar mounted in it. (Though my son would like one).

Feel free to educate me/others on modern silver proof set characteristics and perhaps realistic values, as well as any info/values on the YN/YC set.

Thanks!
Jeff

  • Most modern proofs after 1973 are deep cameos.

The Young Collector's sets were issued by the Mint. They come with a coin and informative booklet.
  • I have seen that set in my local shop (the Civil War one) and it was priced at about fifty dollars. I don't remember exactly.

It was in a case and I wasn't allowed to look at it. image

I *think* this one talks about what life was like for the drummer boys and what sorts of dangers they faced.

I could very well be remembering incorrectly, as my research on the subject was quite a few months ago.

The Young collector sets seem to be quite collectable and are often hard to find at a good price as they demand a nice premium.

Thanks for all the answers so far.

As for pricing - I see Amanda saw them for around $50 - the only one on eBay is BIN 50 (But has been there almost a year in a store), and the only other one in the completed items didn't sell at $25 (not sure if it was the set or just the coin). I don't have any of my books here at work, but the store usually prices them around Redbook value. I can probably get both for $40 each, just wasn't sure if they were in the ballpark or not.

I've never seen a 95 silver proof set that wasn't DCAM; those sound like dogs to me.

One set was really nice DC on every coin, I just didn't realize that 99% of the modern silver proofs were DC and it wasn't anything "Special". The other set was lacking cameo on the rev of the Kennedy, and I wasn't feeling the obv of the cent either.

I think I'm passing on the mint sets, but I'm probably going to get a Youth set for my son though.

the yn sets have very small mintages....if my memory is correct I think they are 1,000 sets.... however I often sell them for bid/ask....but I am sure they should have some premium

OK, if I can ask one more question - what is current bid/ask on the 95 Civil War 1/2?

    Steve,

None taken - those are my babies. Darker one is my 3 1/2 year old and the lighter one is one of her pups about 15 months old or so. Both AKC Goldies. If we still had an OF, I'd post a bunch of pics of them from their photo shoot - they were in a local Humane Society's 2006 calendar.

    Thanks all.

I ended up buying both of the YN Civil War sets. One for my son and one for my 1st YN giveaway here:
