Contacted Teletrade regarding the misuse of the term RAINBOW TONING . Response posted

As sent to Teletrade
Having had my fill of the rampant misuse of the description "Rainbow Toned" I wrote the following:

Subject: Re: Your requested Mr. Wantlist Coin matches

You guys repeatedly misuse the term, "Rainbow". A conglomerate of sometimes unattractive colors does NOT make a coin Rainbow toned. Just picture a rainbow. (ROYGBIV) Banding of these coloes which are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet , constitute Rainbow Toning, not just a bunch of colors in no specific order.

To which, they replied!

Thank you for your feedback on the Rainbow descriptions. We are considering adding a description of the rainbow term to our website. Thank you again. Sincerely, Irma.

I used to have my TT wantlist configured to notify me when rainbow coins were listed. I got tired of looking at crap so now I don't look at *ANY* Teletrade "rainbows." Their misuse of the term hurt the cosignors and their own final value fees. I see now that they have a Rainbow Lots Only selection and a Toned Lots Only for Mr Wantlist. The toned only must be really rotten.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    I couldn't agree more!
  • Perhaps they've developed their own definition of rainbow. You know, like the same way some grading companies decided to redefine the term "First Strike".

The difference is that you can verify if a coin actually has rainbow toning. image

Buy the Coin not the description.

Some of the "toned" coins on TT actually have better color than some of the "rainbow" coins.

I also agree they've misused the term.

Yes and the day before this, Ian called because of some questionable events that had transpired in a previous auction.

In that auction a certain bid was showing, so I entered my max bid which was considerably higher than what was showing, confirmed the bid and immediately afterwards the auction ended yet somehow in that split second I was outbid? image

The only thing I can see happened is that someone had placed a higher max earlier. Still, it was quite frustrating and really irked me. image

In other words, they're going to redefine Rainbow™ much as others have redefined First Strike™

image Time will tell but what they have shown in the past as "Rainbow Toned" is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaar from it! image
  • Reread Segoja's post... he is absolutely correct.

Also, TT has improved 200% over the way they used to abuse the term.

I think someone had placed a higher max bid earlier. Let me give an example. Current bid is $100. Your max bid is $300. Someone else's max bid put in earlier is $1,000. You won't win the lot.

LOLOL, sounds like the standard BS non-response from a Teletrade flunkie. I consider Teletrade just another online auction dumping ground for mostly low end stuff and high grade moderns the mass submittors just made and want to dump quickly. At least Ebay has stuff that makes me laugh sometimes.

  • Notwithstanding the fact that Boom is a silver Washer fan, I have noticed that TT, like many, has a very

tough time getting colors to show properly on nickels and cupro-nickel clads. If you were to bid and win

a couple of Jeffs with the TT "rainbow" moniker, that did not look all that colorful in the pix, you would

likely be quite pleased when you recieved the coins.

And some , even many , of the coins described as "toned" are basicly white !

  • While Irma certianly is sweet , and they have gotten better with their "rainbow" label .......

i`m tired of clicking on hundreds of described "toned" coins only

to see a basicly white coin

Perhaps, the new label they need to add is........TeleTone. Nice and benign and nobody knows what it means...so, no expectations. Problem solved.

I disagree. Irma Kane is not a Teletrade flunkie. Being the go between with the public and Teletrade, meaning customer service, is a job she is known for and I think is she good at it.

Anyway, thanks Boom for throwing a punch at Teletrade for this. I agree totally. Not only is rainbow toning thrown around, but they seem to use Toned loosely too. I clicked on a Toned icon to see only a little rim tone. Just like Supercarcoins said.

If Teletrade doesn't stop placing the Rainbow and Toned icons on coins that don't deserve them then they will just keep looking silly and ticking everyone off. Then I bet we will eventually see another email from Irma that will say after reading between the lines...sorry, Teletrade doesn't get it. Try again later.
