While looking for a Proof Buffalo Nickel , I have seen many of the old green PCGS labeled coins .Is there a problem to have the old labels reholdered ?When did the old labels appear ?

Why do you want to reholder? These old green holders frequently bring a premium when sold because people believe the coin's color is stable after not changing color after many years in the same holder.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

I think it more likely people view the older green holder as being graded more strictly than current grading.

There were 5 different versions of the green slabs between 1986 & 1998, each with a different perceived grading standard depending on the holder and the coin series. Some are graded tighter and some are looser, IMO than the blue holders used today.
And no, there is no problem with getting them reholdered. By "reholdewred" I assume you mean the Reholder Service where the coins are simply put in a new holder without grading. If so then having a "loose" graded one reholdered could benefit you. If you mean reholdered by cracking them out and submitting them raw then a "tightly" graded one could benefit you if it grades higher today than it did 20 years ago, if there is a big price spread between grades.

IMO Buffs have remained about the same except for some keys and toners which are more market graded today vs tech graded 10-20 years ago.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

  • I prefer the old green lablel when it comes to buying ASE's. I snagged quite a few of them on teletrade this year. The proof ASE's were a bargin instead of a premium.
