Think about it. You need a perfectly circular piece of metal about an inch across. The local metalsmith can probably make them up for you for five cents apiece. Or, you could just get a bag of pennies from the bank...
I was at a show last week and a guy had a few of these but without the handle in his case. He was calling them "gears". I told him the story about them and he took them out of his inventory.
I've seen several of those over the years (pictures). There is even one out there made using a 1793 cent, but I forget if it is a chain, wreath, or cap.
