The Barber Coin Collector's Society (BCCS) survey reveals hoarding of key date Barber quarters

It comes as no surprise to Barber quarter collector's, that a recent article in Coin World would reveal the hoarding of key date Barber quarters - according to a BCCS census and rarity rating survey of Barber quarters that was taken earlier in the year.

Dates at the top of the list for hoarding included the 1897-S and 1909-O, both very tough dates to come by in circulated grades. The article suggests that between 2 collector's, more than 40 of these dates have been hoaded in the AG - VG range.

Also included were the big "3", the 1896-S, 1901-S, and the 1913-S. One collector reported having 4 examples of the 1901-S, in the AG to XF range, while another collector reported having 18 examples of the 96-S, 8 of the 13-S, and 14 of the 1914-S.

All in all an interesting article in the September 25th edition of Coin World. The next BCCS quarterly journal should contain quite a bit of information pertaining to the results of the Barber quarter census and rarity survey that was taken by the BCCS.

  • Interesting ... but I think the 1896-S and 1901-S in AG or G are two of the most overrated coins ... there are always plenty available. The 1901-S in AG is on my short list of the most overpriced circulated collector coins on the market.

Totally agree with you on the 96-S and 01-S in AG or G. On the other hand, I wouldn't consider the 97-S, 09-O, and 14-S to be overly abundant, even in the lower circ grades. It's going to be interesting to see how the rarity ratings change after the latest BCCS survey.

Do you believe people fully disclosed their holdings? Perhaps there are more hoarders and larger hoards than were reported?

Good point. There are many potential pitfalls to any survey of collectors' holdings.

same with most all key date copper small cents and also most all key dated coins 1880's on up into the 20th century

i know many collec tors that have hoards of 200 or morew 09s vdb many have 100+ or more 1877 indian head cents some with 1916 standers a dozen or more one man has them all in fine all the way up to unc a member of these here boards!!

most all key dated coins of the later 19th to 20th century have been hoarded for decades since the 1960's by collectoes that are now currently retired ++++

I'm sure there are many, many more out there. If you had a significant hoard would you reveal its extent?

I might reveal a hoard of a key date if it was in a lower grade, but probably wouldn't if it was in a higher circ grade or in MS.

I no longer subscribe to the weekly papers. I get most of my coin-news fix right here. Will look forward to the BCCS Journal though.

I'm not surprised by the results from my own experience in this series, and I filled out my form honestly so they could compile my measly dozen coins into it.

I must admit, that I have 2-3 1909-O's lying around in my collection that I picked up a couple of years ago. As for the 1897-S, I have one that Ipicked up with the couple of 09-O's. That was back when you could pick these (09-O's) up in dealers bulk boxes for $2. The 97-S, I was able to pick up for $10 in G-4. Even then I knew it was a steal with such a low mintage.

Now time to wait on the Dime and Half census.

This is the amount of collectors who'd kill to have your "measly" dozen coins.

Your half dollar set is also image
