Yellowed Borders

I am looking for info on how yellowed borders will affect the grade of a card. For example if you had two identical 1952 Bowman cards that would normally grade PSA 8 but one had a nice white border and the other had a yellowed border. Would the yellowed border card still grade an 8? While going through my Bowmans I am finding I have many in similar condition but they range from bright white to different degrees of yellowing and I am trying to figure out which ones are worth grading. Also when it comes to vintage Bowman commons what is the lowest condition where it is still worth having it graded? Thank you in advance for any and all replies.

  • Does anyone have any advice for me on this or is this considered a dumb question? I am new to grading so I am a bit of a dummy image

I don't think they're dumb questions at all. I just don't know the answer.
  • I think you mean "BORDER"

It doesn't seem to have any effect on the grades of '41 Playballs. I've got some 8's that are very yellowed.
I believe, but am not positive, that '52 Bowmans used 2 different paper stocks.
As far as minimum grades on common Bowmans, under the current grading pricing I don't think anything below a 6 would be worth it, and probably below a 7. As many '52's were sold in penny packs be careful of wax stains, that will take the grade down a bit.

  • Quoting from PSA's own grading standards...

PSA 8: "The card can exhibit... slightly off-white borders."
PSA 6: "Card may show some off-whiteness on borders."
PSA 4: "Borders may be slightly off-white.
PSA 3: "Borders may be somewhat yellowed and/or discolored."
PSA 2: "Card may show considerable discoloration."
PSA 1: "Borders may have become brown and dirty."

So I guess it depends entirely on the grader's interpretation of "slightly off-white", "some off-whiteness" and "slightly yellowed", and of course the all-important "eye appeal" of the card.

the 52 bowmans have 2 distinct border colors cards 1 thru 80 I believe are on a duller stock then the rest of the set. could this be what you are referring too? cards 1 thru 80 can also be found with the whiter stock as well.

    hope this helps.

edited to add: actually it is card 1 thru 73 not 80
