Out with the kennedy half!

We all need to write to the mint and tell them to come out with a better design, the kennedy half dollar wears so terrably, has no luster or eye appeal. Ive searched through about $50 in kennedy halfs and dident find one worth keeping. Perhaps they just need to modify the design to five it luster, reduce wear.Personally i think the kennedy is a cool coin without thinking about it numismatically, but when it come to grade, and eye appeal these things are losers.

<< <i>Personally, I like the reverse how it is, but the obverse could definately use some spicing up. >>
I disagree. The reverse may be nice and all...but all the 06 mint sets I have the reverse is where all the damage is. The shields have all been knicked or scratched pretty bad. Enough to keep the grade to a 67 at best.

I think the older ones with the curved shield held up better in circulation than the new ones with the flat shield.
I think they should do away with the half altogether along with the dollar coin...neither circulate.
Cheers,

$50 worth?
Surely this must be a typo as $50 worth of Kennedy's is like passing judgement on the Lincoln cents after having looked at only 4 rolls.
Now if you meant $500 or perhaps $5,000 worth then this would be a different story. Personally I have searched though 10 to 11 thousand dollars worth and have found many many coins worth keeping.
If you truely meant $50 worth, all I can say is keep looking before you pass judgement. The fact that the coin does not circulate provides a very good source for getting really good examples of this coin. (And some pretty cool silver pieces at the same time

<< <i>Why do they keep minting a coin that doesn't go into circulation, would be a better question. >>
Silver Eagles, Gold Eagles, and Platinum Eagles come to mind...

Those are not coins.

<< <i> Yes they are. They have a face value, and are available for use in regular transactions. >>
Yes, they are "coins," but obviously are not intended for circulation.
I have thought for a while that it is strange we keep producing the half dollar - you never see them used.

that was a joke, right?
Order a $500 box. When you find they are all uncirculated 1995's, you'll have some nice ones........
As for the dollar coins they need to be kept, there cool. I use those every now and again as well.

Probaby not. I'd like to end the Kennedy half run as well, but for different reasons. Since halves don't circulate anyway, why not make the half denomination a true non-circulating coin -- that is, a commemorative? Every couple years the Mint makes a half dollar commem, and it's usually clad composition. So why not just make commems every year instead of Kennedys? Kids would be able to get them at face value from banks, just like SQs, instead of the ridiculous $30 or so the mint charges for one of their special commem halves. Make a different one every year, and you've got a swell collectible.

Get rid of the cent and current half dollar. Change the nickel to aluminum or a small bronze coin.
Get the small dollar to circulate by slowly withdrawing the bill, and get a half dollar that's like the
dollar coin but half the size. It's also time for a $2 coin which should be distinctive; possibly ringed
bimetallic. It should be a little smaller than the old half dollar.
NEVER GET RID OF THE CENT,ITS THE NATIONS MOST VALUABLE COIN!IT CIRCUALTES,SAVES US MONEY,HAS ENORMOUS NUMISMATIC VALUE.THE COIN HOBBY WOULD WITHER WITOUT IT!
