Local NW Ohio show report.........the sky is falling!!
I attended the monthly Toledo coin show this morning. The show opened at 9:30. I arrived at 10:30 to avoid the opening rush..(Ha,Ha). When I arrived the parking lot was unusually empty. I wondered if the show was actually going on......then I saw a car with the license plate "MS65".....I knew I was at the right place. I headed to the local "Gold Bug" first who had noone checking out his stuff. I was looking for certified PCGS or NGC gold material. He had mostly circulated stuff with a couple MS63 PCGS certified "Indians" for way more than what they were worth. I moved on to other dealers. I was surprised to find several OGH PCGS slabs for sale. From what I observed the OGH myth was indeed a myth. I observed several OGH Morgans that appeared to me to be overgraded.
I did see some new dealers that I had never seen before......please note I only attend this show every 3-4 months. Why do I suggest the sky is falling????? Because several dealers were selling NNC, CCGS and other 4th world party slabs. I estimate I observed over 100 of these slabs. As I walked around the show if I observed one of these slabs in a dealers inventory I kept on walking.........I'm shocked that these slabs have made their way into middle America. The sky is falling, the sky is falling..........even the small/local dealers are trying to rip people with "High Grade" slabs.
On a positive note......I did find several early commemorative issues that I bought that I previously ignored. My new favorite coin is the 1935 Texas 50c. High relief and totally affordable. What a coin!!
I for the first time did not buy any raw coins. I looked at several raw examples that appeared to be whizzed. I also observed several recolored IHC's as well as polished Gold coins. If you don't know how to grade or even have a shadow of a doubt of a coins original surface.......just say no......Well that's it........Hope you enjoyed the report. Buyer beware....That's my point!!
