My take on the Long Beach show

This was, to say the least, an interesting show. The perspective this is from is that of a dealer that mostly sells "collector" coins. Circulated Indian Cents and Buffalos, Lincolns cents, Morgan and Peace Dollars. Prices ranging from less than a buck to over $10,000. However the vast majority of our coins are in the $10 to $300 range.
Wednesday was dealer day, and we sold only about 1/3 of what we normaly do. Thursday was very slow and several dealers commented about this. Friday was a little better, but not much. Saturday, which for us is somewhat slow, was quite busy. Buyers were looking for deals, and finding them. I believe that dealers were straped for cash and were selling coins on the cheap to generate cash.
Attendance looked light, except on Saturday where it looked busier than normal. A lot of talk was heard about a slow down, down turn in the market. Toned coins were VERY soft, in a slab or not. The coin doctors are VERY good and a number of them were walking the aisles hawking thier wares.
For us, we ended up doing about 1/3 the business we have normaly done. For what it's worth, the key date stuff sold, the common stuff sat. We sold both 1893 S Morgan Dollars we brought, along with both 1909 S VDB cents. Semi-key Buffalos did well also. Common date Morgan and Peace Dollars just sat.
Next up for us is the "mini" ANA show in Las Vegas next month, we'll see what happens there.

A very good job and it appears to dovetail very
accurately with the other reports from the show.

I would imagine a mini fire sale for a lot of the dealers with low cash flow as there is a long stretch now to FUN after New Year's. Yeah, there are St. Louis and Vegas as well as a handful of smaller local shows. But the liquidity is dried up after September Long Beach for many. With the uncertainty of the elections, the Fed, the stock market, world tensions, and the metal prices, this is going to be a cold and sweaty few months.
