Whitman Folder Help Please!

I have a Whitman Folder for my wheat cents, but I am having the worst time getting them in there. I am following the instructions on the folder, but to little avail.

Is there a special trick? Am I simply not strong enough? Are the holes perhaps too small?

My thumbs really hurt. image

Thanks! image

The way I do it works every time. Just get a screw driver and a big hammer..... image

  • Pressure is the only way...unless the book was stored in a high humid area and the cardboard swelled up.

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.

I think that would be detrimental to the coins, but thanks anyways.

I am glad that I could help.

Seriously though, you need alot of pressure to get them in there.

  • Leiana, I'm assuming that we're talking about circulated coins here, of course. You might try taking something like a wash cloth or clean sock, and place it between the coin and your painful thumb. I'm told this strategy seems to help a bit. It should also be noted that detergents or contaminents in the fabric might transfer to the coin, so do not use for expensive or high grade issues, of course.

A little of this to reduce the diameter of the coins is smoething I always find helpful image

Seriously, though - stady pressure, bottom edge of coin first and you can work the coin in... Thin gloves can help keep oils from your thumb off of the coin. No matter what you do, they're tough - too little of a hole and it's hard to get in, and too big, the coin just falls out.
  • Amanda,

There is a good bit of variability to the holes in the cent album. The method we used with my sons Whitman album is to take a screwdriver with a fat blunt end, place a handkerchief over the positioned cent and put more pressure on it by pushing down with the blunt end of the screwdriver till it pops in.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions! image

Brute strength ( image ) netted me two coins in the proper holes, so I'll try some of these tips. image

I stopped using the Whitman folders years ago. Those holes are almost impossible to get coins into. And even then, some of the holes have a nasty habit of NOT holding the coins resulting in coins falling out all the time.

Might I recommend you buy a Dansco album. They cost a bit more, but they protect coins far better, are much easier to use, allow you to view both sides of your coins, and you can use it for decades.

  • Interestingly enough, it is only Lincoln Cents Volume I that is giving me grief, Lincoln Cents Volume II is nice and easy.

I'm getting a Dansco for my Buffaloes. image

The Lincoln folders are for cents I either pulled from circulation or from wheatie rolls, so while I might get a Dansco later, I am okay with the Whitman folders. Even though they frustrate me so.

  • Try pushing them in with a Chapstick container. Plastic won't hurt the coin and gives you the added pushing power. Has worked for me for 20 years.

  • Using a combination of the tips presented, I managed to get all the pre-1930 cents I had in their spots. image

    Thanks!

I just have 1930-1940 left, and all my cents will be in their spot!

We used to use a golf ball with a protective cloth between the golf ball and the coin. It is important to push the golf ball with your hand instead of using, say, a driver.image

i found that using a pen to" taper" the opening first adds to ease.then i used the backside of the pen to insert my coins as its way softer then any coin made and does no damage.just my experience offered here

  • Once you get them in, don't forget to put a BIG SLAB OF TAPE across them to keep them from falling out.image
