New Auto Dollar Auction Win ( Caution big photos)

I always liked these and won this one at Heritage for my collection. This is my 4th ( can there be too much of a good thing? )

What do you all think?

I love it. May be just a tad overgraded IMO but it doesn't make any difference. Great coin.

What I really like is the originality. I could not attend the auction so all I had were the images to compare and did you all see the images on the others in the sale ( as well as the one in the superior sale? ) Some of them looked downright horrible and in at least one case the raw image looked completely different then the slabbed version. I would have went for all of them but didn't feel confident with those pics.

Original surfaces are really difficult to find on these coins. I have seen many of these, in TPG slabs, that have been cleaned.

I like it. I agre with Ajaan, that most of the ones I've seen have been cleaned. This is one of those coins that I keep telling myself that I will own someday. I just have not found the right one yet.

I was lucky emough to find a nice "Birds over Junk" about a year ago raw that was slabbed 64... I want one of these and they are tough... very tough in original condition. This coin has a cult following

This also a coin I would only buy certified by ICG, PCGS, or NGC.

Can someone out there teach us the diagnostics for real and/or fake Auto Dollars?

Not that I suspect this coin in particular.

Two of the key diagnostics for fakes are the presence of unusually wide rims, often with a "mushy" look to the denticles; and/or significant underweight, frequently about 5g.

Another is variant calligraphy, which is hard to spot unless you are very familiar with Chinese characters.

  • Congrats! There were 3 Auto Dollars in this Heritage auction. I got the ICG VF25 for only $700 in total. The last one, ICG XF45, is a scarce variety of Auto Dollar, which is called as 3-leaf type.

Anyone buy the one in the Superior auction???

Congrats on your Heritage win Bob!

Now if there was a book written on these it would be great. Anyone know if the ANS has published anything over the years?

  • I feel the one in Superior is a bit expensive, since it is normal type (2-leaf). This picture shows the difference between 2-leaf type (normal) and 3-leaf type (variety). However, I don't know how much the difference in price should be.

    Nice coin!

I thought about collecting a Chinese silver type collection after finding some inexpensive Hupei and other ones, but the Auto Dollars in nice shape were out of my budget range.

I've started a mini hoard. It must be the addictive personality in me. I have also bought almost 50 specimens of a certain token ( in the hopes of putting rolls together, I guess ) which range from 10 dollar blown out worn down near slugs to gems and everything in between.

Who knows how long this is going to continue with the auto dollars. I'd prefer to do this with Vietnamese coins but haven't had much luck with those coming up for sale often enough.
