You Should Not be Collecting or Dealing in Expensive Premium Toned Coins if 2 or More of the Followi

1) You need to show the coin to your partner or friend or a dealer at the show before you can make a decision

2) You think it's automatically ok because it's holdered in a PCGS or NGC holder (especially NGC image )

3) It has colors or a toning pattern that you've never seen before or aren't familiar with

4) You cannot form a confident and conclusive opinion about the coin within 10-15 seconds

5) You have less then 5-7 yrs. experience in collecting or dealing in premium toned coins within a specific series

6) You've had 2 or more coins returned from PCGS in bodybags for questionable color/toning within 1 yrs. time

7) You have toned coins that you were sure were ok when you bought them, but now have serious reservations about

8) You get paranoid about your premium toned coins and want to sell them after reading certain threads about others getting burned

9) You would feel very uncomfortable paying a large price for a premium toned uncertified coin

10) You find yourself always second guessing your opinions after you hear the opinions of others

Nice list of qualifiers, but I think you can substitute many, many categories for "premium toned coins": rare date gold, middle date large cents, choice AU bust halves, red copper, brown copper, Saints, cameo Kennedy halves, etc.

Interesting post...perhaps a tad narrow minded however. So, a new collector that loves toned coins should wait 5 to 7 years to collect them? Even if they have found a dealer they trust?
  • dragon----You, sir, are absolutely correct. As is RYK. And you are right on especially about the 5-7 years that it takes to be ready to buy with conviction of your abilities. If folks would follow your points, there would be less problems everywhere in the coin business IMHO. GREAT POST!!! Bob [supertooth]

In all fairness, this should be changed to a percentage of bodybags. If I submit 1,000 toned coins and only get 5 bodybags, I'd be superhuman. However, if I submit toned 10 coins and get 5 bodybags, I'm clearly a sucker.

good overall points but not necessarily valid in all regards. i've had two coins i felt good about go from BB to holder in the past three months, so according to #6 i was wrong and then right.
  • In regards to #5 I disagree.
If you have been collecting for 1 month, have money you can afford to SPEND (not invest mind you, but true disposable income) then you have every right to buy that NT or AT beauty you see.
Heck, if someone can go gamble (as in the slots, etc) thousands away without catching grief or hurting themselves financially, then why can't they instead just buy a pretty coin???

I have been seriously collecting only 2 years. I buy what I like and what I can afford. There is no real cost to my being wrong on the value. I pay based on how much I personally value ownership, not the market. So I never lose.
  • I've been collecting coins now for 30 some years, and have never had a body bagged coin from a grader. Your guide lines seem to have some merrit however your delivery needs a bit of work.

I guess its all in what you see when you look at something........
  • I would agree with the "dealing in" part. Collecting? Collect what you like. If you have the disposable income that would otherwise go to buying a new Ferari or Porsche, collect what you want.
If you are spending a month's salary on the coin and you can't make the rent, then, yes, you should think twice about buying that toner. Actually, think twice about buying anything expensive.

Yup, that's the spirit I like to see on here. "AT beauty" yup, and as they say on here..... "who cares if it's AT, if it's pretty and you like it is all that matters." And the scumbag dealers that sell the stuff, and the scumbag coin-docs thank all of you on CU that feel this way.

In order for the Coin Docs to succeed , they need support from the numismatic community. Specifically they need Dealers to buy and sell their stuff. They need collectors / investors who will buy / sell their stuff. They need all opposing viewpoints stiffled by being discounted/ shouted down by the Coin Docs themselves and their shills. Most of all they need silence as far as being "outed" by anyone that may know who they are.

This Coin forum can support Coin Docs by everyone posting beautiful AT material and then having multiple posts cooing over how original and valuable the coin must be.

Everyone show your support for the Coin Docs now. They're just trying to beautify the numismatic world while earning a modest living. image

Give me a break! I think we have all seen that the split between AT and NT is perhaps indistinguishable in a certain part of the market. Raymond Wayte toned coins could be called AT... but I like them.

When it comes time for me to spend my money, I will spend it how I chose. I don't support coin doctors, or known coin doctors, but I have the right to spend my money irregardless of my ability to determine that the coin is guarenteed to be NT versus AT.

Tell me of anyone who is 100% right in their picks of coins when it comes to AT vs NT??? So, if the pro's miss 'em often, why should I not buy coins I chose to buy? It is sort of a cheap shot to assume my post was intended to say I support coin doctors! That's just ridiculous.

I have every right to use my experience, for what it is, to figure out if a coin is NT or AT and buy it if I like it. Every right in the world. If you are going to say I support coin doctors, you may as well say that everyone that likes toners or sells toners is supporting coin doctors. So, owning cars is promoting car thieves in your world? Anaconda must be an avid supporter of coin doctors too... oh my!

    Think before attacking.

    6) You've had 2 or more coins returned from PCGS in bodybags for questionable color/toning within 1 yrs. time

Considering that any grading service can be erratic with regards to what types of toning they find to be "market acceptable"™, I don't think this point is fair...

    ..............

This is post 10,000; might as well get it over with. I will worry about a giveaway later.
So what percentage of toned coins in PCGS slabs do you think are AT? I'm talkin about coins that were toned before being slabbed and not after.

I prefer to call any dealer who matches the above qualitifcations-A WANNABE!

You'd be amazed how many dealers do NOT know color-I mean what is real and what is not-no matter what front they put on in public. >>

But no dealer is perfect, are they?
  • Good stuff! I especially like #4 about the 10-15 second decision. Seems like that is enuff time for most... but there will always be a small number that you just can't get a fix on.

If I was going to buy an expensive toned coin

I would follow the following procedure:

    1. I would want it in a 1st tier holder
That being no absolute assurence of NT

    2. I would want and experienced and reliable
dealer or collector, knowledgable about toning, to
review the coin for me. In general, there are a number
of savy folks either in general Numismatics or specialties,
that have a good feel for what is NT and not just market acceptable.

    3. I would then look again at the coin and make my own evaluation as
to the toning and whether the tone was worth the premium asked. As the
old saying goes, measure twice, cut once.

I have nothing against true NT coins. I am just being a whole lot more careful
about them even if they are slabbed.

Suddenly, toned coins are problem coins (lol).
All old coins tone under normal conditions.
Seems like it will be a good time to find exceptional NT examples.
