Paying with Credit Card to safen the deal...How?

Figured I'd just ask fresh on this rather than piggy back.

I've noticed folks mentioning that they always pay w/their credit cards, and hence are less concerned about a ripoff. How does this work exactly? If I get into a situation with a seller and clearly have a dispute, I've always gone through paypal (for better or worse) to resolve it since I've paid w/credit card but THRU paypal. With higher dollar purchases, I'd like another option just in case. So how does the credit card itself protect you. I always pay w/ credit card, but for the points/miles, not for the security. How can I take advantage of the SECURITY the credit card allows? Any info helps.
Thanks.
Jeff

It's my understanding that your credit card company will sometimes back you in cases where Pay Pal fails to do so, but you are probably SOL if you paid through Pay Pal with funds from a checking or savings account. If I'm wrong on this, I'm sure someone will correct me.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • Your credit card company will support you in the case of a "ripoff" charge on your credit card. You have this additional layer of security than with Paypal alone. Paypal doesn't like that (because Paypal can then become liable) so it makes every effort to steer you toward paying via a non-credit card method.
  • If you get ripped off by a seller, you can call your credit card and dispute that charge. Like a stop payment I guess. We have used it a few times.

If u are a Seller that takes Paypal, it is possible that a "scam buyer" can rip u off by using a credit card for payment on Paypal.

    Example:

Let's say a Buyer won a $1000 item from u (or a bunch of items totaling $1000). All seems ok, as the buyer pays u right away via Paypal. You then ship out the item(s) to the Buyer.

Once the buyer receives your items, he then contacts his credit card company to dispute your items. The Buyer's credit card company reverses the payment they made to Paypal, and then Paypal comes right after u (the Seller!) for the money.

The "scam Buyer" claims some "BS story", like u sent him bogus cards, etc. If this Buyer has not pulled this stunt with his credit card company, in the past, I would think his credit card company will back up his customer.

U, the Seller would be "up sh*t's creek, without a paddle"!

In other words, you would be out the thousand bucks, in addition to losing your items to the "scam artist".

That is why u see many Sellers, not accepting credit card payments via Paypal, or do not take Paypal at all.

I've been burnt only once by a Buyer (was a "non-confirmed" shipping address). It was not a large sum, but it made me angry, just the same.

I've sweated-out some "very large dollar amount deals" using Paypal. I think I've just been lucky so far, as I could have easily been "taken to the cleaners" buy one of those "scam artists Buyers" out there!

Both Buyers and Sellers, need take care!

If you sell on Ebay and take Paypal you CANNOT say no Credit Cards you have to accept all forms of payments to use Paypal to sell on Ebay. Actually according to the rules if you accept any payments through Paypal you must accept all types. A personal Paypal account is intended for buying only, but Paypal does not really enforce it. Ebay however does.

If you file a complaint with your CC it is best to try to resolve the matter through Paypal first. Paypal may close your account if you do not do so.

Very true. In the past I have bought from sellers stating "if you use credit cards through paypal then you have to pay the fees". That I believe is an ebay no-no too.

It is not only an Ebay no-no, but is against the law in many states although enforcement of it on Ebay sellers would be hard.

You can offer a discount for a form of payment, but you cannot add a fee for a certain payment type. You can say if you send check or money order you can take 1.00 off the total, but cannot say if youpay with Paypal you will need to add 1.00

I would love to go back to the days before Paypal was around. In addition to forking over tons of fees every year, Paypal has screwed me a couple times this way. Paypal is so blindly trusting to the buyer, even when my feedback is 1200+ 99.9%. If a buyer says they didn't receive something, the burden of proof is entirely on the seller to prove otherwise. My first loss was for about $100 and Paypal told me that without delivery confirmation, they were taking $100 out of my account. BS!! So now everything over $30, I have to buy delivery confirmation, which adds up on hundreds of transactions. And even now, every once in a while, Paypal will still take out like $15, $25, $22 etc. every time a buyer claims they didn't receive something that I didn't put delivery confirmation on. Paypal is the worst thing to happen to ebay sellers. Buyers love it though so sellers have to put up with it. I really admire guys like DSL who tell Paypal to shove it. I'm not as big as DSL though so I'll only hurt myself if I do that. I'd rather put up with a bad check once in a while, at least I'm able to protect myself that way.

And yes, Paypal will take the money from your account whether it's there or not. They will just make your account have a negative balance until you receive your next payment.
