Pillar 8 Reales Dollar. CHeck it !!

This is my first pillar purchase. I bought it from ebay, what do you guys think, is it real or a real good fake? It has good features but I dont live near any coin stores so I have no idea if it is real or not. It weighs 26.81 grams. Thanks.

Looks like you have the real deal and it is from Mexico as this one is.

Nice detail on the 1771, and beautiful patina on the 1749!

I would not consider the ability to recognize the authenticity of pillar dollar a strength of mine, so I used NGC to help guide me on this one.

  • sorry, all I get is the red x. I can't see your image.

I host my images and website with godaddy.com. I have noticed some cyclical slowness and outages lately, so maybe the red x is a symptom? Hmmm.
  • huh... shows up now.

I don't have my references in front of me, but if the weight checks out, you're probably ok. It's a later date of the type... In fact, I think 71 is the last date of the type, so the denticles and strike are a little more uniform than earlier dates.

I'd say it's a good purchase, but I would generally avoid buying raw pillars on ebay. the fake to genuine ratio is terrible, and a lot are near impossible to spot from an image.
  • I would refrain but I dont have any coin shops within 200 miles of me so I have no choice but to buy them online. If not ebay, do you have any links to reputable online shops that deal in Reales, Japanese 1 Yen silver dollars, and Pillars? I was watching some Heritage/goldberg/ponterio auctions, but I really can't afford to spend 500.00+ dollars on these. Most I can spend is around 2-300.00 dollars. Thanks
  • Yep.

I purchase from him on a regular basis. He's really good to work with, and an excellent authority on the type.

The coin looks good and not cast. The weight is OK. There are good struck fakes out there. The edges usually give away the fakes. If the edges look like this ///// or this ||||| it is fake. If it has a fleur de lis design on the edge and you can see no cast lines, chances are it's genuine. Without the coin in hand it's hard to authenticate them 100%.
These old silver pieces have a certain look and feel that you will learn to recognize after a while.
  • Thanks for all the feedback guys, the edge does have a fleur }}}} flower design but it is alittle faint, I'll post a pic when my sister gives me back my camera. I was wondering should I clean this coin or dip it? If I do clean it, what solution should I use?

    Thanks.
  • I wouldn't.

That piece has already been cleaned, but it's starting to retone pretty nicely.

Overall, if you're looking at cleaning it for yourself, I would not recommend it, but that's up to you. For market value, nice patina is pretty important to the value. I'd recommend you leave it alone, and store it well.
