Crossover questions

I am curious about how the crossover process works. If I were to submit a slabbed coin, does that give the TPGs a context for the grade? I have noticed that several members crackout their coins before submitting them. Is that really the best way to get your desired results?

Or what if I submit a coin slabbed by a no-name TPG. Does that mean the top tier graders (PCGS, NGC) are likely to haircut the coin's grade b/c it was slabbed by ABCo?

Thanks for the help.

The real problem is that the coin graders have difficult analyzing the coin when it's still in the slab, plus the rims are buried. Unless the coin is clearly equal or better than the assigned grade, the graders will pass on the coin and not cross it.

Of course, if you decide to crack out the coin to give the graders a clear clean view, there's a real chance the coin will be down graded or (gulp) bodybagged.

  • Shamika, pardon my ignorance, but if you cross a coin in the holder, the graders don't crack it out to grade it?

For example, lets say I cross an NGC AU55 1834 $2.50 to PCGS at the same grade or better. PCGS grades that coin AU55 without seeing the rim? Then cracks the coin and reholders it in the new slab?
  • Take special note to Shamika's 2nd sentence.

Yes, you are correct. If the coin crosses, you'll get it back in a PCGS holder. If it does not cross, the coin stays in it's original holder.

  • Paulheep, so if I get the coin back in its original holder, the graders decided that it wasn't close to a cross. If I get it in a BB, their first thought was "yes, this is a cross" and then "this is a doctored coin" hence the BB?

Once the graders crack your coin out, they've already commited to the grade i.e. it's too late for them to change their minds.

Now you can send it in and ask for "Any" grade meaning your coin can be downgraded. I for one buy NGC AU50/53 Barber Halves and cross them to PCGS usually as XF45 (which is what I want). On my last submission, I failed to write in the word "any" and blew some money. image
