Looking for answers about these 85 topps packs

I just cracked a case. These packs dont say 1985 across the corner or have the contest.
I know there was a story behind these wrappers . Does anyone remember?

Those were test packs. No difference with what they hold, of course. Pack collectors generally pay an extra buck or two per pack.
That's as much as I know about them.
  • Was it a test wrapper? A test for what? I thought i remember something about running out of the other wrappers or something like that

I would think it probably meant they printed up a bunch more cards at the end of the year and used those wrappers.

Probably Steve over at bbcexchange would be your answer here.

They are regular-size packs, just a variation wrapper. They go for a bit of a premium as I recall, as they're scarcer than the regular wrappers.

Those wrappers match the ones used for the '85 traded cards. They added a sticker for the traded "series". Here's a pic:

I suppose it's possible they ran out of the other wrappers at some point and switched to these. More likely they knew they were going to use these for the traded series and got a head start on using them (test run).

Can you tell us a little more about the 1985 Topps Traded packs? How widely were they distributed? Was that the only year the Traded sets were available in packs? Does the pack contain *only* Traded cards, or are regular cards included, as well?

They were distributed in boxes similar to the regular '85 Topps cards but I think they held only 24 packs. I haven't seen a box, but since the '90 and '91 Traded boxes were smaller, I assume the '85s were possibly the same. I have no idea if they were regionally issued or nationwide. You see the packs for sale on eBay fairly regularly (one every few weeks). There's one out there now (140029045416). Packs included cards from 1T to 132T only.
  • So should I charge a premium for these packs

I would. I think yankeeno7's observation that pack collectors would (and do) pay a couple extra bucks per pack is about right. I'd be surprised if you couldn't move them at $5 each.

5 each damn I've been letting boxes go for 110 time to up the price.
So should I advertise them as test packs?

I'd probably call them variation packs or variation wrappers, although test packs sounds much catchier. Your choice. Good luck! image
