63 only because you have a big hit on the ear with rim nicks obverse scattered and reverse near the top.

I don't really understand what SMS is. Is it Special Mint Set or Special Silver Set?

I do know that the coin is silver and is from a Special Silver Set.

Special mint sets were made 65-67 when proofs weren't, sort of prooflike die surfaces, some have mirrors. They were sold in plastic cases and blue cardboard box.

The Mint struck two types of Half Dollars for 1965 - 1967, Business Strikes and Special Mint Sets. The Business Strikes were released for general circulation and the SMS (Special Mint Sets) were issued to collectors instead of the Proof Sets which the Mint didn't make. The Business Strike coins in high grade are worth much more then the SMS.

The mint did not produce any Proof or uncirculated sets for 1965 - 1967, so if you got the coin out of a flat pack Mint set, it is a SMS. You may want to check the price value of this coin in low grade, below SMS MS66, it may not be worth the grading fees. Just thought I would mention it.

Hmmmm...... all of this helps very much, and thanks very much for the info on the SMSs.

I also wanted to add that my coin is white, in case that helps decipher it between an SMS or a business strike.

I'm going to go MS 64 as well, based on marks behind the head, but I also see something on the earlobe
