What is a good source for information on US gold patterns?

Pattern experts? My mom has a gold quarter eagle that belonged to her father. She say's it's an 1812, but it doesn't appear that there were any quarter eagles minted in 1812. She says without a doubt it is a quarter eagle and that it was minted in 1812? I'll be looking at it this weekend and will try and get photo's. Any thoughts?

Here is a web site for US Patterns and I believe it is operated by one of our board members. To tell you the truth, I think your mother is either mistaken about something, has a foreign coin or has a fantasy token.

I'm skeptical myself. This coin was in a safety deposit box for a long time. I remember my grandfather used to talk about it also and also stated that it was an 1812. My mom retrieved it just last week (my grandmother passed away about a month ago) along with some other coins that were in there. I'm very curious to see just what she has.
