I quess I will collecting the Presidential dollars whether I want to or not

These are going to be in the proof and mint sets. 4 in the proof and 8 in the mint sets if what I read in Coin World is correct. I buy the proof and mint sets each year so I can have a complete set of the State Quarters. The 2007 proof and mint sets will probably cost more because of them. 3 more years and I am done collecting the proof and mints sets after the 2009 Lincoln Redesign. I also read they will be reducing the mintage of the Sacs because of these dollars.

  • Though the Registry is good in helping focus on a collection, just because PCGS adds coins to the Registry that you don't like - I don't see any point in collecting them.

  • It will be interesting to see if they fit all of these coins into the two holders of a existing proof set. I bought the mint boxes a few years back that only allow two holders into a slot for a given year. Yay.image
  • Same goes for here.If they are a circulation issue then it is a must have. And for a proof issue also.

I think the bill stated that Sacagawea dollars must be at least 1/3 the mintage of the presidential dollars. I imagin that this would boost the mintage of the Sacs, at least the first year or two.

I have a collector's box that the proof sets fit in in their mint boxes, and it has room for 1999-2008. If the new sets don't fit, I'm going to be sad. image

My concern is the Silver Proof.

After the Quarter program ends, there will only be a dime, a quarter, and a half dollar in Silver.

If they put those Presidential dollars in the Silver set without making them Silver, it surely would be a major scam.

I say they should make them Silver for the Silver set. Then we might have something.

Aren't the Presidential Dollars supposed to be on the same sort of planchet as Sacagawea Dollars?

I bought the mint storage box. I doubt if they will fit now unless they really cram them in.
  • They'll fit in the box easy. Just bust them out of those big plastic holders. image

I'm with all of you about the storage box. A triple thick proof set is nuts.

It just stinks that they're doing a cross-over with the State Quarters, but it's smart marketing at the same time. The mint didn't want the average joe collector to drop off the map when the state quarters ended. Now they will say, "I've got the first two years of Presidents. I may as well collect the whole set."

if you are concerned with collecting the state quarters, just buy the state quarters Proof and Silver Proof sets. You can avoid the presidential crap that way.

But will we by default have to get the Presidential Dollars?

No. Barndog was referrring to the State Quarter proof sets that do not have any other coinage with them. Just the proof quarters. You will only get the Presidents by default in the full proof sets.

Oh, I see. So the sets with the quarters and other pieces like half dollars, cents et cetera will come with the Pres. $s. And correspondingly will not fit in my collectors box.

That is what I understand. Which is why it would be a scam to put them in the Silver Proof set AND is why it would be cool if they made them Silver just for the Silver Proof set.

I have not read the article but my guess is that they will keep issuing the sets as now until 2008 with the new coins being available in new sets. They may just offer more of a variety. And i do agree that if they are issued for circulation that i will have to collect them. (MAYBE).JMHO----Bob

They WILL be minted for circulation in 2007, maybe 2008 and my bet is that by 2009 they will be in roll sets and bags to be sold to collectors only, just like the Sac dollars are now. Why? Because they still have a ten year supply of Sacs in the vaults. After 2007 I predict they will have a TWENTY years supply or more of dollar coins in the vaults. Even after 2009 there will still be a problem with over production. Currently they make about 5 million of each mint of the Sac dollars which pretty much matches the demand. If we assume that the mintage for the President dollars would be about the same that will mean 40 million president dollars made for sale to collectors. But since they have to make a Sac for every two Presidents that means 20 million Sac dollars for a collector demand of 10 million. The mint will be stuck with 10 million unwanted Sac dollars every year.
  • I would venture to guess that the dollar bill is headed for extinction in the near future along with the cent.

  • Define "near future". The SBA as originally proposed was supposed to do away with the dollar note. It's been 27 years and we have had the SBA, the Sac, and now the Presidents coming up, but the Official government position is that both forms can and will cocirculate. That is a formula for the death of the coin and the continuation of the note. So the dollar bill looks like it still has at least 11 more years of life in it. (Unless legislatively something changes.)
