How does this work? Doesn't seem to make any sense concerning SMR prices.

Here is the question . . . A 1955 TOPPS TED WILLIAMS in PSA-7 list @ $600 and a PSA-8 list @ $2,750, while a 1953 BOWMAN COLOR PEE WEE REESE in PSA-7 list @ $915.00 while a PSA-8 list for only $1,500. I am aware of pop reports, but that just doesn't make any sense at all. Just curious, am I missing something here?

TED WILLIAMS PSA-7 pop is 244 and PSA-8 pop is 95
PEE WEE REESE PSA-7 pop is 150 and PSA-8 is 120

Still seems a bit out of whack in my opinion that the REESE is considerably less than double in PSA-8 than PSA-7 and the WILLIAMS is more that 4 times greater in PSA-8 than it's PSA-7 counterpart. What's the rationale for that sort of discrepancie?

Don't go by SMR- it's an outdated guess. Best bet is realized prices.

According to vintagecardprices.com the most recent sales:
        '55 Topps Williams
        PSA 7 $500. $519. $546, $416. $565. $581.
        PSA 8 $1824. $2178.

        '53 Reese
        PSA 7 $759, $699.
        PSA 8 $2187. $1643.

If you're basing your valuation on SMR you're going to be off a bit.

      • O K, but isn't SMR based upon realized recent prices?
      • It takes several months for the SMR to be updated. Good example--66-67 Topps Hockey PSA 9 commons. SMR was recently updated to $150 or $175. Recent prices realized have all been over $500. Eventually PSA will catch up
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

      • SMR isnt even an educated guess sometimes. Ask anyone that has a set registered when there are prices for cards in PSA 9 where they dont even exist yet. There are a ton of cards that have cards where 8 is the highest grade attained, and there are even few of those, and yet they are still priced the same as any other common. I dont even use the SMR at all actually, though I do read it and study it. I pay for a card what I feel it is worth to me, regardless of what Beckett or SMR "says" it is worth.....
      • Quick answer, NO...

        the simle answer NO

it is rarely updated unless data is sent to psa and rarely are there minus signs.

I"ve seen it updated a few times in specific grades when someone has something coming up for auction and would benefit from having SMR bumped up.
Unlike the registry, I don't think there is anyone dedicated to keeping it updated.

      • WOW! I need to wake up, thanks for the advice! I thought that the SMR was the Bible for sportscards. I have a lot to learn, and the education has been costly!
      • is there any other free sites to look up old ebay auctions for older cards besides the t206.net site?
i'd love to find one for e90-1's and t202's
      • e90-1 and t202 have both been so hott lately that past auction results may not even show current value. unless of course they were very recent results.
