Opinions on this blue PF IHC

This coin is on a reputable dealers site, but considering all the furor lately over AT'd proof Indians I wonder if it looks NT or AT. It's in an NGC PF66 holder.

edit: Here is another that looks kinda strange to me - in a PCGS PR65BN holder

Blue on proof IHCs is pretty common and is considered to be NT.

I once owned the 1879. It is in an older NGC holder. It has very nice mirrors and does not look anything like the recent crop of altered IHC's. I believe it is correctly graded and like it.

both those coins look like crap to me. that's not to say whether or not they were toned through accelerated means, i'm just commenting on how they look now, which is awful

Yeah, I read all the threads on the coins that had the lacuor removed - that's why I asked the question.

Re "These colors are common on this series:" My only concern is that these colors are becoming even more common with each day that passes...

Saw the second coin on Ebay not long ago.

I certainly wouldn't rule AT or NT out but the coin is fugly nonetheless.

Not with a ten foot pole. Blue and purple copper is dead to me.
    2nd picture looks tweaked.

Not all blue IHC's are created equal. One must learn the series before casting aspersions. I have not seen the 1881, but the 1879 is a nice coin.

Here is my overexposed, washed out photo from when I owned the coin. Notice the wonderful orange peel mirrors.

    Nuff said...
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • The image of the second coin does look like crap.

By the way, feel free to post images of any of our coins and ask for opinions any time you want. I have thick skin and expect at all times no matter what the coin is that someone will either call it AT or whizzed or ugly. It's the way things have become here.

And thanks for referring to us as reputable dealers. I appreciate that.

Seriously though, some people like the "toning" on Proof IHCs, but I'm not one of them... especially since Marks reference. Leo

I like the first one, but I'm having a hard time holding down last night's dinner when I look at the second one.

  • They would be fine, if they were not naturally or unaturally toned in such garish colors.

  • I have the second coin in hand and the coin is way better than the image, thank goodness. That image makes the coin look like it's been cleaned with a wire brush and then artificially toned.

I was hoping you would see this thread and respond - for several reasons. First I really do have a lot of respect for Anaconda - The photographic contest you sponsored a year or so ago was impressive to me because of the level of trust involved. A three thousand dollar plus coin was shipped all over the U.S. to people you didn't know with no assurance you would get it back. That indicates you trust people, and I trust people that trust people. Second I followed the episode concerning the AT Peace dollar. I thought that was handled in a very professional, up-front manner - again very impressive to me. Then came what I call the dope head thread that was quickly deleted by the moderator, and my respect dipped considerably.

Now, I'm by no means an expert on toned coins, Indian head cents, or copper coins in general, but I have read all the threads on this board about how coins are doctored, and especially proof Indian head cents. Then I see on Anaconda's web site at least two coins that seem to fit the definition of AT coins based on previous photos and information posted here. What am I to think now? Has Anaconda, NGC, and PCGS been scammed, or are they actually NT but because of all the recent publicity over AT coins getting a bad rap, and finally does Anaconda have any concerns about the coins?

btw, my post wasn't intended to insult, just to opine.

on the 2nd coin, even if those are the wrong colors, that pattern of toning is totally bogus. no way in he11 does that happen to a ihc proof w/o "help". now, if you happen to like the coin, kudos to you, but it's more difficult & more challenging to find a proof ihc that looks "normal" then 1 that's hooked on lsd
