Ottoman Empire AH1277 yr 4 :10 para proof + 1/40 th quirsh newp

I have a small collection of 19th century coppers, medium to large size, as these were the coins that the vast majority of people used most of the time for their everyday transactions. Lately, I've been particularly attracted by 1860s copper from Arab countries, such as Tunisia, Ottoman Egypt and now Turkey itself .

In anycase, for ruler Abdul Aziz (1861-1876), year 4 was something special, as I see a lot of special issues that were minted by the Ottoman countries that year. Here's a recent purchase from NEN, AH1277 year 4, 10 para proof, with lovely blue and violet irridescence:

    Absolutely gorgeous! image

You're right about Year 4 -- the Egyptian pieces from that year have a very elegant simplicity.

Very true. I have a most unusual denomination from that same year, a very pretty 4 para in BU that I got from Josh in Chicago, images of that one soon.

BTW, the word para, which is the equivalent of lepta, cents, centimes, centessimi etc, exists to this day in modern Greek. Of course not in the official language taught to kids at schools, but in slang:

para(s) = money (rarely used nowadays but often heard in songs and b/w films)
    para-daki = the dough
    para-lis = very rich person
    para-dopistos = stingy

    and many more

I have two of these para coppers, but I can't recall the denoms. They're maybe a little larger in diameter than a nickel, but thinner.

    Thanks for the language lesson.

I would have thought a "para proof" was a coin that fell from an airplane. image

I received the coin today, as it was on hold for a while.

Although the NEN image is great, it is something else in hand! Deep mirrors that one still photo can't capture, it's either colour or mirror effect, anyway a terrific coin.Maybe I should get the 20 para of the same year too. image

The price/quality/age ratio is a joke compared to anything Greek of the same period which is one of the reasons why I started buying these Arab copper coins to begin with.
