So politely request a refund of the sales tax and include the relevent text of the law and the link. If they don't refund or refuse to make a refund, then inform them that you "will be informing the IL dept of revenue that they are collecting sales taxes on exempt items, and probably not sending those collected funds to the state. This will probably result in them becoming very interested in your business."

Good call.
Might want to wait until you received positive feedback, though.

Ditto on that. I am a dealer of coins and currency in the Land of Lincoln - and a high-ranking official in its state numismatic association as well. Indiana - thats another story!

I have a good idea who they are - they're from Arthur, IL, in Illinois Amish country. And whoever Dawn, she is dead wrong on charging you sales tax.

This is the email I sent today :
Dawn,
I have not recieved a response reguarding the issue of you charging me State sales tax
on my purchase of the PCGS dime set ; Ebay item # 8418173852 (May 12 , 2006).
I want you to refund the mischarged sales tax . If you ignore my request, I will
escalate this issue . I would like your sales tax I.D # .
I will also file a dispute with my Credit Card Company . Furthermore , I will
lodge a complaint with Ebay`s Safe Harbor .
Lastly , I will be informing the IL dept of revenue that you are collecting sales
taxes on exempt items, and probably not sending those collected funds to the state.
This will probably result in them becoming very interested in your business.
Please avoid a problem and contact me without delay .

<< <i>Why would you buy from anyone with 21 negatives on ebay??? >>
Good question.....
<< <i>Why would you buy from anyone with 21 negatives on ebay??? >>
well .........i`ll tell you
I saw they had nearly 7000 transactions ; and a 99.7 % rating
those negatives break down to about 1 unhapper camper per 350 happy ones .
I really did not look at their negs per say , but I did see the 99.7 % rating .
And i gotta say that one person out of 350 ; or , one pissed off /misguided/unhappy one
per 350 is pretty good around these parts .
In conclusion though .I will have to be more careful !

I understand. I also understand that there are many with thousands of sales with 0 negatives.
Hopefully you will file a complaint with Il. people.
Good luck and I hope you get your money back

Ah, an actual admission from a "Flea-Bay" seller. Amazing! Whats next - politicians actually telling the truth (yeah right!)

Well something tells me that they probably don't have a tax number at all and they have been pocketing all the collected tax money. The last thing they want is the state revenue dept snooping around. (Frankly even if you are operating completely above board you don't want the tax people snooping around.)

Condor - The State of Illinois has no tax on coins and the Illinois Department of Revenue (who are not the swiftest bunch of people in any room) is only worried about the taxable items (like Red Books and Saflips).

I understand that but the impression I got is that they are selling a lot of other things besides coins (just checked, I was right they do) and they are collecting sales taxes on those items. Hence my wondering whether or not they are actually submitting those taxes or are they using them as additional profit? If so they would get really nervous at the prospect of having the revenue people notified, agreed?
let`s hope for their sake they have been paying their taxes properly.....
they sell a hellova` lot of casino chip`s , cards, and the like .
Surly `their not ignorant enough to gamble on the TAX MAN !!

I think they sell sport cards, and if so, then those who buy them (and flush money down the toilet in the process) then they're subject to sales tax (6.25% in most of Illinois except in a few places (like Chicago, larger towns, and counties who have no concept of sound conservative spending.))
