Grades popped....

2 09109596 1979 BURGER KING 4 STEVE CARLTON PHILLIES M/G
2 09109597 1979 BURGER KING 4 STEVE CARLTON PHILLIES M/G
3 09109598 1984 DONRUSS 317 JORGE ORTA N/A M/G
4 09109599 2006 TOPPS STYLE '52 51 SHAQUILLE O'NEAL N/A 10

This was kind of an experiment. The Allen's and Carlton's were previously in 8 slabs and I thought they could get a 9 on the right day. I sent everything in with a min. grade (9 on the Allen's and Carlton's, 10 on the others). I might go this route in the future. There may be a psychological "suggestion" to the grader if you send with a min. grade. Almost like they're rooting for the card to make the grade, so if it's on the fence, maybe they let it slide. Also, I think they'd be hesitant to send back an entire submission "Did not meet min. grade" for fear of losing you as a customer. This happened to me several years ago when I bought 2 trimmed 1950 bowman cards (I didn't know they were trimmed at the time), but I sent them in for 5 day grading, and one came back trimmed and the other came back a 6. The card was 8 or 9 quality if it wasn't trimmed, but I think they gave me a mercy 6 because I spent like $60. I might try the Carlton's one more time for fun.

So you think they slabbed a trimmed card as a 6, just so as not to reject your entire submission? What made you think it was trimmed?

I had the opposite- my first submission I sent in 4 cards, and 1 came back as trimmed. I knew it wasn't, and didn't submit another card to PSA for 3 years. When a friend had a large credit on a buy back I submitted a few cards again, including the previously rejected one. It came back a 7, which was the correct grade. So I agree that rejecting cards causes lost customers (especially when they are wrong) but am not sure there is a concerted effort to misgrade a submission just to keep them coming back.

  • LD- No extra charge for a min. grade and you can do it on any submission.

Grif- Yeah, I'm pretty sure the card was trimmed- both cards were bought from the same guy, the price was way too good for their condition, and they were both a little short. That was back when I only did modern and didn't know how many card doctors there were out there. I think I even mentioned I thought it was trimmed when I listed it on ebay. I can't say for certain that they intentionally let a trimmed card slip through, but that's the feeling I get. Who knows.

Hmm. What were the 84 Orta and the 06 Shaq graded at originally? Did you send them as cross-overs or did you break them out of their original slabs first?

I thought the min. grade was only for crossovers. Is this new that you can use it for any service?

When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I have often wondered about doing this too. In browsing through some of the grades I came across a few 86 fleer that had about 20 cards and 18 were M/G but the other 2 were 10's.

I think it may put a mental nugget in the graders mind.

  • The Shaq and Orta were raw.

Funny, I was always under the impression that you could request min. grade for any submission, but maybe it used to be only for cross-overs.

I think the min. grade request is a great tool for cards that you're looking to sell that wouldn't bring much money in a lesser grade. A while back there was a thread about someones sub that had straight 10s for over 50 straight serial numbers. This is probably what they did.

Is it cheaper for the cards not slabbed? If not then why not have them slabbed either way?

  • I would whether if the graders would even know that the cards were submitted under "minimum grade".
